Male Nursing Students

Hi guys!

I am doing a report on the current nursing shortage, and the role that men play in it. It seems that a lot of the shortage could be avoided if more men would join the field. What are your opinions, and how do you feel about being male in such a female dominated industry? Any suggestions for making nursing more attractive to the fellas too?

The local college pumps out about 150 new rns a year and there are two hospitals in this town with a couple more in nearby towns but those same towns also have colleges pumping out students. That is why there are no jobs in my area. There are alot of LTC/SNF/Home care facilities but they use mostly LVNs although a couple have started hiring RNs and paying them LVN wages and the nurses are lining up to get the jobs.

Where in West Texas are you? I went to school in Lubbock and wouldnt mind heading back to West Texas after graduation in May 2011.

Just a couple of hours south of Lubbock. The pay is better than Lubbock, and I haven't seen any grad that was serious, unemployed. Come on down! A New Start

Hi guys,

I'm currently doing a pre-licence nursing course in Australia, where the demand is through the roof.

So if any of you guys are wanting an Australian holiday, surfing, pretty girls in bikinis, barbeques, great food,

awesome extreme sports......come on over.

The pay is also not too bad, depending on your experience of course.....but once you're up, then you get all sorts

of benefits.

Truth be told, im in my 7the week of nursing school, and well a few challenges.

Namely.....ahumm......im actually finding it hard to concentrate on my studies because of all these hot girls in my class. you might be laughing...but it is seriously hard to concentrate, especially when they where minis and revealing tops etc. no chance.

the other challenge guys.....ummm....well i come from a non-science background, so i suggest you blokes beef up on you biology big time. especially human biology, just rip an anatomy and physiology textbook from the library (there are heaps of them) and meditate over it.

also, challenging....to be honest, washing patients is necessary and noble to help those in need, but.....

when you get back home.....man do you need to go play golf or go to the gym or somthing else, it isn't hollywood.

General trend is, make sure that you got good coping strategies, i.e. a regular exerciser, and BIG one this one....

seriously work on your time management. im learning the hard way, as sometimes i tended to procrastinate.

This cannot occur in healthcare....always something to do, always something more to learn, always a new article to read. Lifelong learning. Go, go, go....active industry.

all that being said, not enjoying the fact that no longer earning money, because of full time study, and nursing practicals in the hospital.....just can't wait to start enjoying the financial benefits.

is there anybody else doing nursing school who isn't from a science background?

Welcome aboard! I think a lot of us would welcome a working vacation "down under".

As for the hotness of our female colleagues, well, it will just have to be our cross to bear. I am an older person and have learned various coping mechanisms.

For you I suggest plenty of cold showers and advanced mathematics.

mpolo what about the units of measures ? what do you guys use for conversions ? do you use the same as the US ? that vaca sounds bad ass i always wanted to use nursing to travel a little and i love barbque

There is a huge Nursing shortage and we are facing the largest RN retirement wave in history.

Keep in mind new grads that the Nursing shortage is not a new grad shortage but an experienced RN shortage.

New grads are extremely expensive to train and have a very high risk of causing lawsuits. New grads do not tend to be the first choice in hiring RNs, just because you have the title RN behind your name does not make you Florence Nightingale.

Those graduating now buck up, you're primed for a huge RN market boom, get ready to ride the retirement wave!

I would have to agree that there truly is a nursing shortage now and there will be a greater one in the future. I say this for myslef because even now in hospitals in my area of NC the Nurse to patient ratio can, on average, be 1 to 10

I understand what you guys are saying about the nursing shortage coming to fruition as the baby boomers get older...but where will the money come from to create these needed jobs? This kinda sounds similar to our social security situation in the future...or maybe I'm just over thinking things.

Baby boomers are getting old. Old people get sick. Unless Medicare fails and the private insurance industry fails and 2012 occurs the patient load should go up increasing demand for RNs. At the same time the older baby boomer RNs are leaving the field additionally creating a RN vaccum.
