Another 40-something Newbie - just joined

Hi gang, Nursing Newbie here. After 20 years as an architect, I have decided (I think) to take a career turn and go into nursing. My interest in nursing has been peaking over the past few years, and the latest economic downturn gave me a reason to really do something about it. I just found this forum, what a great resource. I am looking into the University of Michigan's Second Degree program. I did my B of S & Masters at the U, and I live in Ann Arbor, so it would be my first choice. I just signed up at the local community college to take Chem and Bio. Hopefully my classroom brain still works after all these years, although with all the distractions of being a teenager in college years ago (you know what I mean), I'm amazed it worked at all back then LOL.

Anyways, just wanted to say "hi" to you all, and thanks in advance for all the great advice

Dave

You will do just fine. I'm a forty something taking my prereqs at a community college. The classroom brain will kick in and you will be just as competitive or more than your classmates half your age. Blessings to you!

I just turned 40 last Nov and have been taking my prereeqs since Jan 07. I took the Nursing entrance exam about a month ago and received my acceptance letter yesterday. So, it is achievable and age has nothing to do with it. Most of the younger age students did not get in so age is probably on your side. Hang in there!

Hello!
After two years of trying I finally got in to a CNA class here. I begin May 5th, and I am super excited! I just turned 40 years young and cannot wait to begin the rest of my life. I already have a degree, but I am looking to enter nursing school. I plan to start working as a CNA and attend an LPN program somewhere. Then perhaps continue with my RN. I know it is a long hard road and I have no dilusions regarding the amount of work involved. I am incredibly motivated and determined to succeed at this. With Gods help of course.

I am eager to meet like minded friends here!

Hey There,

I'm 45, spent the last 2 years on pre-req's. Aced them all. I was just accepted into a local program.

I have a wife, a full time job & 3 teenage kids.

Don't talk to me until it's over :-)

It's hard work but if you want it bad enough you CAN do it!!!

I'm 40 and supposed to start an accelerated program this Fall. I find it comforting to know that there are others going through the same thing. Hang in there!

Just turned 40 about 2 weeks ago and I start my pre-reqs next month. I'll be starting school 20 years after I last started school for my first career...a professional photographer. Since professional photography is all but dead (killed by the digital revolution and moms with cameras), it was time to take up a new career. One that not just anyone can buy a $500 piece of equipment and start doing with no training or education. I'm sure school will be a rough ride, but I'm really looking forward to the challenge.

Good for you! I just finished my first semester of pre-reqs at 46. I was totally focused (vs my young college days) and got A's in both Chem and Anat. & Phys. You'll do great!
