Ages of male nursing students?

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Of the 23 other students comprising the group that I entered nursing school with, three of them are men. The class that is graduating at the end of next week I believe has 1 male student, and as far as I know the class immediately behind mine has 1 as well. This is about 60 students (some classes have had students drop), with 6 of them being males; that's only 1 in 10.

So we know that male nurses are few and far between, but how old are we?

The 1 student in the class graduating next week is 28.

The 1 student in the class that entered the semester after mine is at least 30 (a second career-er I believe).

Of the 4 in my class, 2 are about 45, 1 is 40, and then there is me...21.

How old are you guys? How old when you started school?

Just curious.

I'm 42 and will be starting an LPN program this fall, unless I get bumped up to RN. I only have 5-6 students ahead of me. If I don't move up then I will transition next year to RN. This will be a career change for me as I have been with my current employer for 15 years.

Good luck all!

Wow, glad to see some guys my age going into nursing and A.D.N programs at that! Congrats!!! I posted a while back. I graduated the last year, during spring of 2010, and am currently 18 years old. I got into nursing school and start this fall. I will also graduate when I am 20!!! Congrats again! to everyone!

I'll be 24 when I start the nursing program in fall 2012. Currently doing all the prerequisites I can.

51 years old here. Did MA program, then decided to go for RN. Used be an electrical contractor. Shocking huh! Only thing I don,t like is after the pre reqs have to be on waiting list to get in the program. This is calif mind you. Maybe I should move where I don,t have to wait. I do,nt want to need a nurse myself by the time I get in the program.

I too want to know how these 18 year old kids out of High School were accepted into a nursing program to start immediately with no pre-requisite work. Around here, you NEED to have all of your science classes (Bio, Chem, Microbio, A&P I & II) completed with a 3.5+ GPA as well as a bunch of non-science non-nursing related AA Degree work done to even be considered (Because it is required coursework for the ADN-RN degree). I started when I graduated, and the earliest I could have been done with my ADN-RN degree would have put me at 22 years old because of the required college coursework.

But then people like you with MA can't get in even though you've got (presumably) a proven track record of good grades.

Sorry if this sounded aggressive or scathing I certainly didn't mean it to. Basically I'm just asking where you live/go to school.

Here in MN it is difficult to get into nursing programs, unless you want to pay $40,000/yr +++ then you can walk in with nothing.

Sorry....I'll be 24 when I graduate in May 2013

In response to studentgolfer, I was accepted as a pre-nursing major. The first two years will be pre-reqs and few nursing specific classes, then i'll have to apply to upper division nursing during the spring semester of my sophomore year. I think its more of a contingency type program. So we aren't jumping into the nursing immediately. Plus I already have almost 30 hours from high school that takes a year off.

So you were accepted to the actual nursing program based on your high school record, and AP credits earned. Plus you have to finish two years before you begin your program. Does this mean you have 2 years pre-nursing and 2 years nursing? This sounds like what we have up here in MN, you go to school for 4 years and you get an ADN-RN, like the work you do is less important because it's a 2-year college. I can live with this, but how are these guys getting accepted straightaway into NURSING SCHOOL as an 18 yo and graduating at 20 with their RN license? I want to know their secret!
