pediatric skilled nursing facilities/long term care in maine

U.S.A. Maine

Published

Hello! Just wondering if anybody could give me some insight on pediatric SNF/LTC facilities in Maine. I'm currently a RN at a pediatric SNF on an infant/toddler venilator unit in New York and my boyfriend and I are thinking of relocating to Maine. I'd much prefer to stay in an environment similar to where I work now than to find an acute care job in a big hospital. I fell in love with Maine and I absolutely love my current job, so any information would be so helpful in planning our move! Thank you so much. :)

Hi!

I don't think we have anything like that here...We have group homes for adults with DD, but I don't think there are any SNFs dedicated to pediatric patients. Are you looking for Maine, or are you wanting New England? I worked at a peds LTC similar to yours in Mass, there are 3 such places/units there that I know of. Most of the kiddos that go to those kind of units are kept at home to the best of my knowledge.

If you want to go to Boston, try

New England Pediatric Care

Seven Hills Pediatric Center (they don't do vents, or didn't last I knew)

Franscians Hospital for Children

Spaulding Rehab Hospital

Or, if you want to do homecare in Maine, Maxim has several peds cases. I do peds HH, if you want more ideas PM me :)

Good luck!

Research the Elizabeth Levinson Center, in Bangor ME. It's very close to what you're looking for. They are a long term care facility for children with chronic mental and physical needs. Primarily, the patients have severe degrees of mental retardation and need full time care, but they also have a lot of medical problems as well.

Bangor is a great place to live. It's a little more urban than other areas in Maine, but a short drive to the coast for tourist areas like Bar Harbor, the mountains (for skiing/winter activities), and a couple of hours from the southern Maine (warmer) beaches as well. Good schools, low cost of living, and some really nice new developments as far as housing. There's also several local hospitals- including one with a fairly large NICU, pediatric unit and pediatric ICU.

There are probably a few other pediatric LTC facilities, but I don't know of any. They probably exist in the bigger cities, like Portland area.
