is it wise to do lpn first then rn online?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hi everyone!

I am considering doing a 12 month LPN course and then do an online lpn-rn course, while i work as an LPN. Have any of you taken this route and is it a good idea? I will be moving to Charlotte, North Carolina so any advice related to this state will be immensely appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!:bow::bow:

Ditto BetterMe, I completed my LPN at a community college and will take my state boards on 1/28/08. I just received my official certificate from my school today in the mail. So neat!

I am enrolled in The College Network to complete my pre reqs (I only had my psych class completed) and will complete my ASN degree with Excelsior College online.

Getting into an RN program at a traditional is almost impossible in my area. The wait is very long and the compition tough. I had a GPA of 3.6, but there were many in my class that had better. Anyway, I was so glad to find this WOMDERFUL opportunity to complete my RN and cannot wait to take my boards and hit the books again.

Good luck to you SuperModel. You CAN do it!

I guess it depends on where you go to school. I have quite a few friends and coworkers going from lpn to rn right now and they hate it. They have to spend so much time covering the basics. Also they are doing practicums in very basic care areas while they work partime in acute areas.

Can I ask you why you enrolled with The College Network? Why didn't you just enroll with EC? The College Network has nothing to do with EC they are just a publishing company if you haven't already been informed.

That's why I'm going the EC route, I've alreay made more beds than I can handle.

I really think bed making should be ulliminated from all nursing programs. A little more time on actual nursing science, it is a BScN afterall, would be nice.

Why do some states not accept Excelsior?

Hi BetterMe, I do know that TCN is a publishing company. I have all my pre req's to do and TCN condenses all the info into 1 book to read and study for each class. I have access to a guidance advisor to help with any and all questions. (They've already earned their approval with me and my questions. ha ha) After I finish my pre reqs I will enroll with EC, but use the books provided by TCN. From what I understand the first nursing class through EC requires several books to buy. I only have one to buy from TCN. Probably the thing that really sold me was that if I take a test and fail it twice, TCN hires a tutor (they pay for) for me and pays my test fee after using the tutor. They guarantee passing.

I've only just begun since I was focusing on my NCLEX up until last week.

I think it just depends on the person. So far what I am seeing in my TCN books is very easy to understand and comprehend. The true test will be with my first test.

I live in NC and they accept Excelsior. I tried for 2 years to get in an RN program but the numbers were so competitive that I kept missing out. I live in the Raleigh area and trying to get into a program is crazy. So I tried to get in to a school that was over an hour away and did not make the cut on the NET test. I did make high enough to get into the LPN program and I'm so happy that I passed and now work making double what I made as a CNA. I just graduated Aug 07 and enrolled in Excelsior college and I am working on the 4th nursing test under the new curriculum. The information that I am learning is nothing but review but the challenging part is studying on our own. It takes great discipline to do this, that is why some don't complete the program. This is the best option for me because if you do the LPN route first, most nursing programs won't accept you unless you have 2 years of work experience.(Another road block) I chose excelsior because I'm eager to get my RN and will do whatever it takes to get it.

Hi , I also graduated in Aug ,07 I have just started the Execlior lpn -rn program none of my classes fron lpn school are transferrable so have about 16 courses , I am now working on socialogy I am also eager to get my Rn and need to stay motivated I di find it challenging to study alone but try to take my book whereever I go and study Thanks
