Un-necessary classes

Nursing Students LPN-RN

I have had to take some of the most unecessary classes for my degree...we have to take classes in "clusters", such as a Humanistic Appreciation, Cultural Diversity, and so on....

For instance, what does a pottery class have to do with nursing? Nothing, but I had to take it to fullfill a cluster...

or, an Anthropology class? Nothing, but I had to take that too.

What is the reason for this nonsense? Do any of you have to do the same?

I realize that it is supposed to make us more "well rounded", but does it really? or does it simply help the school get more money?:chuckle

But I guess I will do what it takes to get to my degree... How 'bout ya'll?

What do you think about it?

I took the opportunity to take those classes at my CC. Hopefully all my liberal art classes transfer. Each school has its own requirements, but I've enjoyes taking some classes. I need to take a history classes, World Civilization, which I am TERRIFIED of. Maybe I'll taking Early American history. History is most definitely not my favorite course. I took Music History twice and dropped because it was too time consuming listening to the required music. As for art, I can draw, but some professors demand just too much, maybe I'll take painting or sculture. But the thing is that many of the 4-year-school required Art History, which I find a bore. I remember taking a class and almost everyone in the class was familiar with the famous paintings, then I decided to take another class, because I knew that Art History was not in my LEAGUE.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but what about classes that you think should be required but aren't?

What do you all think?

Yes, for instance, here in Texas, I wish they offered Spanish for healthcare workers as part of the curriculum. I took Spanish I & II in HS but it really didn't help @ all. First of all, it was way too long ago, 2nd of all it's Castillian (sp???) Spanish - so not @ all the same that is spoken here and 3rd we didn't cover things like pregnancy, don't be afraid, do you hurt, don't move etc., you know?

And I'm in agreement with cad4296, I think @ least one economics class (instead of 2 hx. and 2 govt.) would be a lot more beneficial for us as a profession. How are we to promote and represent ourselves in the business world if we have no concept of things like supply & demand?

With the direction nursing is headed, sometimes I think they will require "Butt-Kissing 101" soon. Unfortunately, it would probably be helpful...:chuckle

I have a AAS in liberal arts in preperation for a BSN. It is my own personal opinion that all the classes art, history gov..etc is a bunch of hog wash. I would much rather see a ADN or BSN program contain 2 or 4 years of classes that actually pertained to the profession like someone mentioned spanish for medical workers, maybe some legal classes for nurses and take the nursing courses and get more in depth. Like for instance I know wound care is covered throughout the program but make it a class and get down and dirty with it. There are so many wound types, medications and treatments that are not covered because of lack of time. I am not saying get rid of all the pre-classes .I believe that any psych , soc or science is completly appropriate. But all this other junk is a waste of time , but thats just my opinion.....

Great website to find out those useful spanish phrases is freetranslation.com . Or if you can take a class in CONVERSATIONAL spanish, you can ask the instructor......"como se dice 'when did you have your last BM' en espanol"

I just finished one of my pre-requisites for the ADN program at our local community college. I had to take SPEECH ! Even the instructor said that she didn't see why they required it for the nursing program, and that small group communication would have been more appropriate.

I hate speaking in front of people. Major fight or flight response, with rapid heartrate, rapid shallow breathing, shaking, etc.

The good news is that I got an A for effort. Since the program I am applying to is impacted (aren't they all?), I have to get As in all my pre-reqs to get into the program.
