Too Old to go back for LPN - BSN bridge??

Nursing Students LPN-RN

I have been working as a LPN the past 2 years and really want to go back to school to get my BSN. It would take me 3 years to complete instead of 4 since I have my LPN already. I was worried that I am too old to do this... I just got married and my husband and I would like to have children some day. Only problem, if I go back to school right away that puts me at 31 when I graduate and I worry that is too old to start a family. But I am sure that we we started a family before I went back to school that I would never go back and do it.

What do you all think? I think I would really regret it if I don't do this... but I also really want children one day and am scared that waiting till 31 to start a family is too old.....

31 is not too old and besides do you want to spend the next 60 years regretting that you didn't get your bsn?

I had people in their 50's taking the RPN (LPN) course (in Ontario). Some of them went on to take specialized courses (like Operating Room Tech) etc. So no I dont think you will be too old. Is there such a thing???

I am not as much worried about being too old to be a BSN at 31 as being too old to start a family at 31....

I have been a LPN for 13 years and I an doing a LPN bridge to ADN. I do not care to ever be in management so an ADN is good enough for me because the pay difference between ADN and BSN is minimal. Hospitals pretty much just look at "RN". That has been my experience anyway in talking to other RNs and management. I worked as a staff nurse in a hospital for 4 years before going back to school. I doubt I will ever go for my BSN because I am 36 years old! I waited too long to go back to school as it is!!

As for starting a family at 31, I do not think that is too old! Go for it, LPNs do not have much of a future in healthcare unless you want to be stuck in MDs offices or nursing homes!

I guess that depends on how many kids you're wanting! If you're going for some outrageous number like 18, you may want to reconsider. ;) If you're wanting one or two or three or something like that, I don't think 31 is too late, especially if you want to have them all be close to the same age.. you could be done having kids by 35 if you wanted ;)

My mother had me at 31, I was graduated from college before she turned 55, if that helps you judge it ;) If we have 60 year old women in the world having kids, I don't believe anyone will frown upon you for having kids at 31. You're only as old as you feel, after all! I think the regret of not getting your BSN would be considerably greater than the regret of waiting until you're in your 30's to have babies.

I became an LPN in 2006, RN in 2008, and am now in a BSN program. I'm 56.

I was 31 when I got pregnant with my first because I wanted to go to LPN school first. Of course everyone is different, but I had no problems having babies at that age and was very happy not to have kids while in school.

The idea of you being to old to go back to nursing school makes me laugh. I went to nursing school at 53 and graduated at 55. I have 2 years work experience behind me and last spring I started graduate school, hoping to finish by the time I am 60. I am currently debating going back, not because I am too old to do it, but because I have come to love nursing itself, and I have a BSN in addition to a Masters and License in Social Work. There are loads of options for me, and school just is not that appealing at this time. Am I glad I went to nursing school??? Oh yeah!

As far as having a baby after 31, as long as you are in good health, I don't know why not. It is true that your age is associated with risk for Downs syndrome, however the risk is not tremendous, especially in your early 30's. I had one baby at age 19 and as I recall it was sort of automatic, and didn't require nearly as much effort as nursing school, but the raising of said child is a whole other challenge! Much harder than nursing school which was the hardest endeavor I ever undertook purposefully aside from my first 8 months as a new nurse.

You are going to be 31 regardless baring some disaster, when you get there you will realize that you aren't old at all, actually 31 is just the end of adolescence from a developmental standpoint.

Get you partner and hopefully parents and sibling on board and go after whatever you want, and know that it won't stop there. Enjoy the journey!

You'll be 31 in 3 years anyway, might as well be a 31 year old BSN having children.

I didn't know you were a life experienced fairly new RN! :yeah: I check out your posts quiet often.

I know how you feel. I have a degree in art, but recently decided to go back to school to become an RN. Right now, I'm 28 years old. I'll be 29 next month and won't graduate from nursing school until I'm 31. I had always planned to have kids before I turned 30, but I've come to the conclusion that things very rarely turn out as planned!

It's not that bad though. I used to think that 30 was old, but not so much anymore. Women, no matter what their background, are waiting later and later to have children now. It's really not that big of a deal anymore. Maybe if I was over 35 when I started, I'd be a little more concerned. But 31, nah. I'm good and I think you will be too. :)
