Prerequisites 5 yr or no expire in ca why different?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Hello. I was wondering in california mostly southern ca why some schools have a limit?... Some schools have a 5 year limit on prerequisites or some have no expire?... I took some prerequisites about 4-5 years so in the near future they will expire. I was planning on going to WCU but i notice they have a 5 year limit. Could someone explain if the state or the school determines the limit on the prereq?... Also what school or locations have a 10 year limit+ or no expire?

thanks..

Hi,

In my area it is the school's policy however as with everything in academia it might be negotiable. My A&P1 was over 20 years old and I got 4 schools to accept it after I talked my way into A&P2 and got an A. I also got the math requirement waived so I could go right into statistics. I wouldn't re-take anything without contesting it. Good luck.

Usually the 5 yr limit applies to the sciences (A&P, Micro etc) b/c according to my school, at least "they are always changing". Anything older than 5 yrs, that was something like an English class was able to be accepted.

Every school has a different policy so it depends on what ur school is telling you.

If your considering WCU check out Mt St Mary's They have no time limit on pre reqs.

Hello all,

Thank you for the input. If anyone knows any schools in southern or northern california please let me know.

PS.. today im a nurse got my letter.

im a lvn now hehe..

test date was 3-31-08 oh gosh what a wait...

Individual schools set these limits, not the state, and they are subject to change. The school I went to used to accept anything. Now that they are "impacted", they have very strict limits and rules. Rules I couldn't comply with and be admitted again, or would have some explaining to do, just because of my circumstances. I certainly wasn't doing things along the way with the thought in mind that I would have strict standards to meet at some point in time. When I first started out, nobody ever said anything about time limits for science courses. But then, you were expected to start, progress, and finish, without glitches. When people have to interrupt their schooling, or are not accepted while their science courses are under five years old, then they run into problems. It isn't the student's fault if they have complied with a schedule of prereqs and aren't accepted into any program within a set time frame. The schools will state that the time limit has something to do with being up to date with material in the courses. However, practically speaking, it is obviously more to do with weeding out candidates or managing an overload of qualified candidates. Anatomy is anatomy is anatomy. Not much is going to change there. People who are going into a profession should be educated on how to keep up with new data, not forced to waste time and money redoing the same thing every three, five, or seven years.

Oh, I forgot to say (in a long post!), congratulations on getting your license!

In my area (up north a couple of states) there's a hodge-podge of requirements. The school I am hoping to get into (I should know in less than 2 weeks :uhoh21:) has a previous 10 yr requirement for A&P and microbiology for LPN applicants, but others are less. Heck, I saw one place that wanted certain classes to have been taken in the last YEAR. :uhoh3:
