Back to school after 23 years..worried!!

Hi all, well I enrolled for my pre-reqs to start in Jan. I am an LVN for 23 years,no classes since then. I am 44, kids grown, married 19 years. I am not working, hubby supports us, so I can attend school full time.

I am taking:

A&P 1

Intro Micro

Pre-Algebra

Pysch

I am so worried, after all these years if I can do it. Looked at a Micro book I borrowed, read first chapter, does not seem as if info sinking in.

Is that normal? Am I too old to do this? Can I do this?

Math is my worst subject,have to pass College Algebra for my school.

Uggg...can I do this?

I guess I just need advice and encouagement from those who understand the process. Some days I feel good..ok I can do this!

Some days I think...oh who are you fooling...you can't do this!!

What can I do to make my chances for passing better?

Yes, you can do this! And there is plenty of help out there to help you suceed!

Most colleges/universities have a math lab where you can get free tutoring. Plus there is the prof's office hours as well.

Don't think I really used my micro book. Most of your exam questions will come straight from lecture. So you will want to record your lectures and fill in the gaps in your notes. Even rewrite your notes when you get home.

Repetition is the key to math and science.

Hey! You can do this I did. I was LPN for 18 years and then went to RN at a community college at age 41(graduated at age 43) now 44 and 3/4 hehe. It's no cake walk but definately doable. My age wasn't the hardest thing for me although there were only three of us in the class over 40, my biggest problem was trying to be in the student role after 18 years as a LPN. I just LOVED 30 year old instructors who had been nurses about 5 years checking my meds before I gave them or telling me I didn't chart correctly!:angryfire But I just sucked it up and kept my goal in mind. you can do this! you actually have more knowledge than you give yourself credit for. you will be able to get through these classes without a problem. math is my absolute worst subject, too. when i went back to college for my bachelor's degree, i took calculus - have no clue what in the world i was thinking when i signed on for that one. everyone in the class was at least 20 years younger than me, but i stayed after class and the instructor, bless her heart, took pity on me (maybe because we were the same age) and got me through the course with a lot of studying and praying on my part. there are so many good people on this website that are watching out for you and you have a safety net in place with your family. besides, you have kids. remember they know everything and will be glad to help you with your homework! ;) go for it!

I am back in school to get my BSN after 18 years (2nd term of pre-recs with more to come as I can only do one class a term).

I have not been in a math class for almost 30 years as I did not have to have college algebra when I got my RN and I have an A in the class (I am having to take pre-algebra now, then basic algebra, then intermed. algebra, then finely college algebra...... I have a long way to go).

Try not to overwhelm yourself with the reading ahead. It's good to browse and get an idea but once you get into the classes things will come together. Many times the professors will skip around the book so you may be concentrating on something that you won't necessarily need to know. Also, many times they give extra handouts that will help with comprehension.

Other advice: Take one day at a time. Develop good study habits. Ask when you don't understand. Buddy up with another classmate to compare notes or study for tests. Practice, practice, practice the Math problems. If you are still having trouble, go to a tutor after class at the school. When you are feeling overwhelmed about school, close the book and take a break. Go to dinner, call a friend, or go for a walk. You will be surprised how much clearer things will look after you take a mini break.

Yes! YOU can do this!!! Plus: You're fortunate to have LPN experience.

I graduated at 49 with no prior nursing experience. I hadn't taken a math class since high school and thought I wasn't very strong in it. Ended up with B's and got A's in all my science prerequisites! Having been an LPN will make a BIG difference when you're done with the prereqs!!

You may want to start out with just 2 classes to get started and not be overwhelmed!
