Soon to be a new grad....need some advice.

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Hello everyone,

I will be graduating from an LPN program in July. And I'm confused as to how soon you can apply for an LPN position. Can you apply while in your last semester of school? or should you wait until you pass the NCLEX? Also, what do you put on your resume if you have no healthcare experience, I've worked in an office while in school. So I'm wondering do I stand a chance of getting hired with no experience. Thanks for everyones' help.

Hello Reese17,

I just graduated yesterday! :yeah:. You should start looking in your last semester so that all the good jobs arent taken, some of my fellow classmates already had jobs lined up weeks ago. I am waiting until I pass the boards though. Im my state-MN after graduation you can apply for a temporary graduate nurse license-its like 60$ and its good for 60 days. You have to pass your boards within that time frame I believe, you can work with it. As far as experience look at the jobs you are applying for and if some of the qualities from your office experience are what some of the nurse jobs are looking for; emphasize those qualities. Like for ex, If your job required you to be detail oriented, and thats what the nurse job description is looking for then include that. Just because you may not have any healthcare exp does not mean you might not get the job. They will understand that as a new grad and someone will take a chance on you. Just be patient and keep at it. Even if the job says experience required or prefered, you should still apply they might consider it. But you have to sell your self on your resume, and tell them what you can offer their company. Because how are you supposed to get experience if no one will hire you. Also as far as credentials, our instructors told us that you can put pending graduation/icensure date on your resume. Sorry I wrote a mini-novel, but hope that helps.

Congratulations, Ella26!:yeah:Thanks for the info., it helps alot! I live in IL and need to find out if we can apply for the temp. license before we pass the NCLEX. :specs:
