I start LPN school Sept 3rd. I currently work in a retail setting. I was wondering what sort of job I can get in a LTC that would help me when I apply for a job. After the first 16 weeks I can get my CNA license, which I will do, but right now I want to get into a nursing home, or something of the sort. Any suggestions of what jobs I could do? Or advice on whether or not I should just stay where I am ( I have been there for about 1 1/2 years) and just wait until I get my CNA to apply to a job. THANKS!

Check with the nursing homes were you live. Some will not hire you unless you are certified and in others they will. It all depends on the state requirements for were you live. Nursing school also is very demanding and takes alot of time as far as studying. Especially in the first semester. Because the test are different from the others you have taken and so is the way you study. If it was me I would wait until at least I got through the first semester and got use to nursing school. But everyone is different. I have 2 weeks till graduation and beelieve me its been a long year.

You can apply for work as an Activities Aide, Housekeeper, Laundry Aide or Kitchen Aide.

You have a lot to learn, and study the first 6 weeks. I would wait to get your cna. I am glad I have no previous experience in a facility, and therfore have not picked up any bad habits...sorry but I just had my 2nd day in clinicals, and there were serious/dangerous practices happening. It's better to learn your scope of practice in school, then you can known what an lpn/vn should do -- not what a cna does. Good luck, its tough but worth it.

Some have resident assistants, basically help with activities and meals. Try that.
