I need help with Pharm..........HELP HELP HELP

Specializes in Postpartum, Mother/Baby, Comm. Health, Geriatric.

I'm a CPhT (pharm tech) and everyone in my nursing program thinks I know all the drugs. LOL! I do know them, but I don't know the mechanism of action and such.

1-I would suggest studying you top 200 brand/generic.

2-I would suggest knowing what your prototype drug does inside and out.

I looked up pharmacology mnemonics online. There are many that help one remember so much about them. Also don't just learn just certain drugs..learn the classification of meds, what their actions are, what their side effects are (hint if you know the action and how they work you can figure out what the side effects are without looking if you know how the body works) then focus on the drugs in each classification that stand out and that might have something big time you need to know. I didn't try to learn every single drug..just classifications...look at the ending of the generic names...or sometimes the pre fix of the generic name. That can give you what classification they are.

I would recommend for you to truly understand the physiology of the meds and not just try to remember side effects! Because once you know how the med works, the rest comes automatically. It requires for you to sit down for 1 to 2 hours daily, and just read read read til' you get it. I personally did flashcards on the classifications and just studied each classification separately, and was blessed with a teacher who would repeat the information daily til it got stuck in our heads. Also, there is a lot of helpful videos on youtube if you're more of a visual learner, like me :) I found out I passed my boards today, hopefully this helps!

Look up resources for pharmacy technician students. Go on PTCB.org and if you just google top 200 drugs you should get lots of responses like flash cards, lists, etc...
