Anyone know of any Hospitals or Nursing Homes that will put you through LPN school in the Oklahoma City area? I was planning on attending Nursing school to become a Registered nurse, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen because I cant receive financial aid! Tell me if this makes sense to you, Im a 22 y/o stay at home MOM who has not depended on any money from my parents since I was in high school but they still consider me a "dependent" on my parents because me and my boyfriend (whom I live with) are not married!! My parents aren't going to give me their tax info either to apply for financial aid because its "private" :banghead:!!!!! Its so frustrating!!!!! Any thoughts? I really think they need to redo the way they determine financial aid dependency!!!

Actually, they may have made a mistake.

Call the FAFSA people and explain the situation and they will let you know. Is your child(ren) legally your dependent(s)? Did you claim them on your income tax last year? FAFSA states that you are considered a dependent if and only if you don't meet any of the following criteria:

1. You are married

2. You are 24 yrs of age or older

3. You have a legal dependant(s)

So, although you are only 22, and not married, if you claimed your child as your dependent on your 2007 income tax, then you should DEFINITELY be considered independent. I should know as I just cleared up the same mess!

I was told I was a dependent because I am 20 yrs old with no children....But I'm married!! How could I possibly still be considered a child?! Just like you can't be considered one if you have one!!

Good Luck!

I just had my baby last month, and she doesn't get over half of her support from me because I am not working right now. Hopefully I can get a dependency status change!

Just pray about it...Where there is a will, there is a way...Good Luck...

How frustrating! It sounds like you really want to become a nurse. There are many reasons for "detours" in life toward reaching our dreams, but the key is to not give up! Maybe it's not working out at the moment, but it will. Even, worst case scenario, you wait until you are independent to get financial aid...

I'd look into a community college and try to save for at least a class each semester toward your pre-reqs. From this site as well as at my school, I see a lot of people might have the finances, but there's a waiting list keeping them from NS! At least apply and keep trying for aid. The two will eventually meet up.

And, hey, there's a reason for everything! Your baby is so young, and maybe you can appreciate this time! NS is pretty time consuming. Good luck to you!

I wanted to add, since you said you want to be an RN, do take your pre-reqs, but be careful about time limits on those classes as for whether a school counts them as credit. Contact the potential schools you'd be applying to before you take those! My school has something like a 5-year limit on basic science courses, if beyond, have to re-take.
