"Just" an LPN

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

I am so tired of getting this question. "Why are your going to school to be "just" an LPN?" At church when I announced I was going to school for LPN one of the ladies came up to me after and said, "you're going to get your RN after right?" as if being an LPN is not good enough. Well, that's the plan, but so what if I don't? I'm doing this because I have an insane love for learning about the human body, & working with people, not only to have a career. In fact, my current job (non-medical) pays more than most of the LPNs start out at around here. If i start working as an LPN and love it, I may not bridge to RN.

I'm not sure what kind of reply I'm looking for, just needed to vent.

It's a never ending cycle. Why don't you become an RN? Why didn't you get your BSN? Why didn't you go to medical school? Why didn't you become an astrophysicist?

There's no cure for terminal cluelessness.

:lol2: I'm laughing out loud because this is SO TRUE it's ridiculous. Someone the other day asked me why I didn't go on to be a doctor?! Ummm idk because I don't want to be one????? i just passed my boards as an RN!!! people are hilarious. I laugh it off. I'm proud of my ADN and will be getting my BSN december 2014....regardless last time I checked I'm still a nurse!

The best advice I ever heard: "Be who you are and say what you feel because because people who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind!" LPN......33 years!

Patients constantly ask a few of our male nurses if they are going on to become doctors, I think it annoys them more then it annoys me! I mean I get a lot of it is the generational thinking where men were Drs and women were nurses but come on! Times have been changed for quite some time now.

Plus it makes me feel like those patients devalue our profession- "oh your a man, you shouldn't be doing this woman's job!" Ugh vent vent vent pay no attention :p

It never stops. When I was in the health profession at age 17-18, I started out as a CNA. Of course people asked me when I was going to get my nursing degree. I was in school and became an LPN. You can guess what they said, "Are you going to ever get your RN?"

Yes, I did get my RN, but ONLY my ADN. I was ok being an ADN until everyone around me the last few years told me how much ADN's suck. :sour: Now I'm halfway through a BSN program and I'm getting the "Are you going to get your NP after your BSN or your MSN?" :banghead:

Good Lord, when will *I* ever be good enough?

As for being an LPN, part of my heart will always be an LPN. I was an LPN for 4 yrs and I enjoyed it. Had I not had any threat of job loss (they seriously phased them out in Washington Hospitals, that I had no choice). In fact, once I get my BSN, I have been offered a part time job teaching LPN students. I'm very excited about that.

Be proud of who and what you are.
