I got accepted but....

Well hello everyone I was accepted to the LPN program I had began applying for September of this year and was given a start date of January 5th 2015. Yayyyy and super exciting for about 5 seconds when I was slapped in the face with the charges. I was told I had only been approved for a "stafford loan" through fasfa which covered maybe $6,000 of a almost $25,000 program and i needed about $2,000 by next week and every month following $1,500 for 10 months. Not to get too personal but im 21 single and i live alone meaning i provide everything I have for myself with no help and its hard. But because of my age i am still considered a dependent student according to fasfa so they combined mine and my mothers income,which left me with these extreme cost. After digesting that information I went in to fasfa and made some edits and since I had to pick a parent to "live with" I changed it from my mother to my father and then was offered a estimate of the pell grant and the stafford loan with the use of my fathers information. This is my first time using fasfa by the way my first degree was payed for by my high-school. I guess Id like to know if anyone now or in the past has ran into a situation the same or similar? How did the edits on the fasfa work? or is it too late for everything to be processed? I'm extremely scared to face the reality of not being able to do the program. Sorry for the wordiness I like to be informative because lack of information can cause multiple unnecessary things.

I'm not sure, but contests on acceptance. I applied to one company and they wanted $213 a month...ummm too much for my pockets. My BSN program was charging 400-600 per month

$25,000 sounds very expensive for an LPN school. Mine was less than half that amount. Is it a two year program? If it was me I would look for a less expensive school.

I'm sorry I wish I had advice, my school is 20k, I'm paying 1640 a month and just had to give 2,000, no loans at all, it sucks to finally get in and over one hurdle to have another obstacle such as a high price tuition, I hope it works out for you.

Your age alone should not preclude you from choosing independent student. The school may simply in a month or two as for proof that you provide for yourself, but if you live alone and do not depend on your parents, you are independent student.

Ask someone in their financial aid department to review your FAFSA with you.

Thank you I hope things work out for you also. If my fasfa isn't approved from the edits i made I'll definitely have to sit out this time around because i don't have that type of money

It is very difficult to switch from dependent to independent without aging out. You must fit one of the criteria: turn 24 by December 31, be a member or veteran of the armed services, be married or have a child, be working towards a graduate (post bachelors) degree, or be an orphan or ward of the state or emancipated minor.

Well I actually called the 800 number the first time completing my fasfa and they told me if I couldn't answer yes to a group of about 8 questions asking if I was born before 1991 and if I was a emancipated minor ect.. I was still considered dependent.

This is why part of researching which RN/LPN schools to apply to, cost should be figured out. Cost is not a secret and an etra hurdle to jump over. If the cost will be too high, then don't apply to that school. But now that you've already been accepted your option is to either decline the offer or suck it up and pay, which sucks. As for your FAFSA, under 24 is an automatic dependent unless you meet the few exceptions as listed above. When you make a change, it should only take a day or two for the school to get the updated fafsa info, and then how long it takes to process the change just depends on the school. Your best bet is just to call them and ask.

I'm starting a one year LPN program in January and the total cost of the whole thing, including books, uniforms, background check, drug test, tuition, fees, and parking pass is less than $3500. What state are you in and WHAT kind of crazy school is this?

Honestly, as much as it would suck to wait, I think you should find another program that is less expensive. With what LPNs make and the limited roles in which they can work, I don't think the return on your investment would be worth what you're putting out to get it.

If you're working, have you looked into your employer's education benefits? Mine is helping me pay for school, yours might too. But seriously, find something more reasonably priced.
