Frustrated and Torn

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

So I told my in-laws today that I got into nursing school for May 09. I told them that I would have to quit my job in order to go to school full time. Well, they just had a fit. They went on this spill about how the economy is so bad and that nursing homes and hospitals are laying off. I know this is true for some areas of the Country but not so in Middle TN. You can go on just about any hospital website and there are tons of nursing jobs. Nursing jobs are just about the only jobs in the local newspapers here. Even so, they really scared me and have me thinking negatively. I just want to know if you guys think that I would be crazy for quiting a full time reliable job to go to nursing school? This has always been my dream. Why does everyone have to rain on my parade? I've been so excited about this and now I'm torn and really sad.:crying2: Please guys give me your honest feedback.

Thanks to all that replied. I am going to go for my dream. My husband stands behind me and that is all that matters. I'm not going to let my dream slip away yet again. As hard as it is going to be to quit my job, it's something that I'm going to have to do. At this point, I'm both excited and apprehensive but I'm sure anyone that is giving up a job with no guarentees of making it through LPN school feels the same way. I believe in myself and I think that I can do this and I am going to do this.

If your husband is fine with it, the man who you have to live with, eat with and sleep next to every night. Then why in the world would you worry about what the NAY_SAYER have to say about it. I say go for your dreams, and in the end you, your husband and your children will rip the rewards, of you being a nurse in doing a job u love.

How many of these nursing jobs are specifically for LPNs in your area?

There are a lot of LPN jobs here in Middle TN. The job placement rate for the school I'm attending is 98%. The nursing director said that the 2% that are not placed are the students that don't decide to go straight to work after completing the LPN program. There aren't as many jobs in hospitals as there were but major hospitals such as Vanderbilt are still hiring LPN's in their outpatient clinics.

The time is going to pass anyway...good economy or not...so why not have something to show for it!!!!! This is your adventure...your desire......your dream....so you go for it and do not look back.

You didn't mention in this post what you do for a living...if you are already a CNA, maybe you can reduce your hours to part time while you complete the nursing program. Either way, I would certainly do it, as long as your husband is aware that it is entirely possible that you may be waiting a while before being gainfully employed again. Not saying this as a negative, but, what may be plentiful today may change in a few months. Or, after graduation, you will have to study for the NCLEX, pass it, and then, start searching for a position.

From a personal perspective, however, I would probably quit and do my thing, though. This has been your dream, you have been accepted and I sincerely do not believe that this is education that will be wasted. Don't pay attention to your in laws. They are seeing things from one perspective-the fact that your husband will be shouldering the finances. I am also curious on what they do for a living...are they nurses or in the medical field at all? I would think they would be more understanding if they were. As long as you have the support of your husband, that is all that matters.

I am a claim adjuster for a major insurance company. I have a steady, reliable job that I actually like but the passion is missing. I hate to leave the company because this is a company that has been around for years and is very financially stable even in these economically challenged times. I just keep hoping that by the time that I graduate LPN school in 2010 that our Country will be out of recession and headed in a positive direction. Hopefully the jobs will be there when I graduate.

I have to agree with you regarding the in-laws. They both work in factories and all they talk about when we see them is about their coworkers getting laid off. They are constantly worrying about losing their jobs now with the economy so bad. I know that nurses are being laid off in some places right now but I'd say they nursing jobs are more recession proof than factory jobs at the moment.

Hi FutureLPNGirl,

I had to quit my job to attend nursing school full-time and that was one of the best things I ever did in my life.

Family and friends tryed to sway my decision and made me feel bad too.

But, now I have the last laugh and I'm going back to school again! :chuckle

Follow your dreams, you only have one life to live.

Just always keep your head up, stay away from negative influences, study hard and most of all DONT QUIT!

(Plus if you quit, you wont ever hear the last of it from them!)

Good luck in school!
