I'm not sure about your school but I'm starting out as an LPN as a choice. I have met many RN's who will tell you they wished they had started out as an LPN. So as long as your school does not require you to be an LPN first then go for whats best for you.

Most of the schools around here give you the choice of the short LPN program or the longer RN Program. The first year is the same exact classes for both LPN and RN. For the RN program, the first year gives you the education you need to take your LPN boards, if you want to. Most students do so they can work as an LPN while finishing up the rest of the RN program. But some choose not to work as a nurse while in school, so they just don't take the LPN boards and wait until they are done with everything to take the RN boards.

To answer your question, no you don't have to be an LPN (here it CA it is LVN) before you become a RN.

Where do YOU want to end up?

Where I live, LVN's mostly work in long-term care facilities. Honorable and important work - caring for our elderly

But is that where you want to work?
