LPN program at the Thomson, GA campus

Augusta Technical College student here. I am wondering if you are in my class lol.. and who you might be:wink2:

I am in the LPN program at the Thomson campus. Is your instructor Ms. Spens?

No I am at the Augusta campus and my instructor is Ms. Johnson:) This is my last quarter.

Pegasus65 is there any advice for a newbee to the LPN program? We have a "brand new" instructor and alot of my classmates are a little fustrate at times, because this is her first quarter teaching------at any school.....Ms. Fowler was alot more expeirenced as I have heard from others and this seems to be a test for us all. Are there any study tips or tools available to help study for these test?

Hey,

Are you guys in the first quarter? I am thinking I remember that Thompson's start times were a little different than ours are?

The main thing you need to do is READ, READ, and more READ. I cannot stress the importance of studying. We started out with a class of 22 and are now down to just 9 of the original members (Not to mention the extra 3 we got from other campuses last quarter that did not make it forward to this quarter). The ATI tests they make us take at the end of each quarter will either make or break you depending on how high your average is going into them because they count as a percentage of the final grade. If they gave you the ID numbers and passwords, make sure you go to the ATI website and take their practice tests often. I don't know what your situation is like at home such as if you have a job outside the home or small children, but all this will figure in on the amount of time you have to hit the books. Thankfully I have already raised my children. I worked from home doing medical transcription until I went into the actual nursing program, but then I let that go also.

For myself I have found that small periods of time studying work best for me. I will read a chapter or two and then go and do a few things around the house/yard and think about what I just read.. to sort of let it "soak in". Trying to "cram" never worked for me. If you can find someone in your class to team up with and study that will help also. I have one woman in my class I can study great with. We put a team effort into it with me quizzing her and her doing the same with me (generally over the phone). You are probably going to find some in your class that are going to whine and cry the entire time about not passing tests and blame everyone else but themselves. Stay away from these folks, as they will just pull you down also.

I am not going to lie to you... it is going to get progressively harder. Med Surg I & II are difficult. Some of the clinical sites you go to may not be what you expect either. MCG was great, but I can't speak very highly of either of the VA's we went to. It is a matter of just getting through it, trying to learn everything you can, and letting some of the horrible attitudes just roll off your back. Because unfortunately they are there. The good news is that the days, weeks, and months will pass by faster than you think. I can now finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I graduate in June:)

I hope this helped somewhat. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing!

Yeah, this is our very first quarter here at Thomson. We have 26 students to date, which includes to that started 2 quarters ago and got back in-----luckily!!!!! We have some winers already, but when should we we get the ATI passwords and code----we got our books two weeks ago!:angryfire If this is something that I need to concentrate some time too, it looks like we should have already got them by now:uhoh3:! There is a study guide that she is now giving us that is geared toward the actually test.....it seems to work....or at least it did last week.....I'll see tomorrow for the 3rd test. I think some of the complaining got back top her and she made a few comments today, but I feel that we were dealt a little messed up "hand"...here we all are....our very first quarter and we get a teacher who has never taught before. She sometimes covers things and zooms over them going 100 in a 25:lol2:!

I want to do good and pass....we have a little study session in class after we are dismissed going over the study guide and quizzing each other....I group number about 10. I work evenings at Eisenhower, but that may change in a few months as they redo our floor for the next 12 months.....can you say/pray unemployment......at least that is what I am hoping for. We have two clerks who work days on the ICUs and me and another lady work evening shifts. When we temporarily combine, too many indians not enough work. Studying at work is not too bad, I get it when every I can....between admissions and phone calls.

Which VA is the worst....uptown or downtown?....DDEAMC won't usually take LPNs without experience...except if you are working at the outlining clinics do physicals?

Congratulations on graduating!!!

Thanks for your help.....I pray it all works out.:monkeydance:

Hi,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I have been doing nothing, but nonstop studying.. or so it feels. It is one test after another including the Peds clinicals I am doing. If you think you are racing at 90 to nothing now just wait until you get to the last part lol:)

To be honest I didn't care for either of the VA's, but the one on Wrightsboro .. which is I believe the uptown... seemed to be slightly worse than the other one. Hopefully you will have a better experience. It wasn't the patients at all ... it was mainly the nurses. I guess a lot of them don't want to be bothered with students or something because they were extremely nasty. I didn't experience this with the nurses at MCG. My learning experience there was much, much better.

You should be getting the ATI passwords since you already have the books. I would definitely ask about it. You definitely need to pass these tests to get in practice for what is to come. I am not sure how your branch of ATC works, but if I remember correctly... our tests in first quarter didn't count for points... but once you start in Med Surg I and II they DO count. Many members of our class didn't pass because of not getting the points in those two quarters. Unless you keep a really high average in your classroom tests.. losing 15 points can easily put you below what is required to move on.

Good luck to you and keep in touch!

Hey Bikrgrl,

How are things going with you? My class graduated June 17th. Right now I am just taking a break and waiting to take the state board. I felt totally lost the first couple of days out of class. It was strange not to have to study so much.

Keep in touch.

Peg

Congratulations!!

Just to make it out of class and graduate is a huge accomplishment. We loss 3 people from my first quarter calss.....two didn't pass and one just quit for one reason or another. The other LPN class that is ahead of us is taking a beating too. I think they lost some people due to finals. I just don't know what in the world to think right now! I don't know about the other campuses, but I have already been told that our program is tougher than the other 2 campuses.....I don't know whether to be grateful or scared. :uhoh3:

Do you have a date for your boards yet? I feel the same way....like a fish out of water. There is some work we have do over the break for upcoming classes but I have already got most of that work done. Did you have to write out or be familiar with the top 200 drugs? I am still working on those, but they were not like a requirement, but I am typing them out to be somehat in my mine.

Let me know how things are going with the NCLEX.

Keep in touch
