Advice for the LVN Student

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself as a new LVN student, Spring 2011. The program I am going into only takes about 30-40 students at a time. Yay! :yeah: and I made it in! Anyhow, I want to know what sage advice I can gain from allnurses.com. I know to not get involved with politics, do your job, ask questions, keep quiet while in school so you can avoid problems, and just do the best you can. Anything else to keep in mind for nursing school and the journey ahead?

thanks everyone for the advise you gave her. i start lpn school in jan. from vegas. i have 8 month old twins and a husband, this scares the crap out of me but i have a really good rn friend and an lpn friend. so i have the support that i need outside of school. Im almost ready so i thought now i have to make sure i use everyones advise to make sure. thanks so much. wishing everyone luck.

Anyone who has been in an LPN program, can you give me an idea of how many hours a week you spent on school? Comparing the program to a job, is it a 40 hr/wk job, a 60 hr/wk job?

I am 9 days away from completing phase 1 of my lpn program and let me tell you - you really have no idea what you're in for until you begin. I don't think there's really any way to prepare for it. I would find out what books you are going to have and get started on some reading. A lot of people had issues with Pharmacology and A&P (and subsequently got dropped because of it), so if you get a jump start on that, learning the material in class might not come as such a shock to you. Also, I bought the book "Student Nurse Planner", they have some great tips on how to study, how to manage your time, and advice on clinicals, etc. Just know that you are going to be busy. You are going to be juggling classes. You have MULTIPLE exams every week (in a plethora of subjects), in addition to tests, quizzes, and lab (not to mention clinicals - we started around week 6.) I heard many people say that it was an "intense" program, and that is an understatement. Our class started with 29 students and has now dwindled down to 14!!! There is NO ROOM FOR SLACKING OFF! That is the hardest part. Just when you feel like you can't take it anymore, the weekend comes. The hardest part for me was changing my life around. School has become my #1 priority. I basically have no life. BUT it is also so rewarding. I am so close to being a nurse, and I know that I can do it!!!

To answer the question about study time, it's anywhere from 2-6 hours a night depending on what subjects you have. We have just taken finals for all but 2 classes, so it's getting a little better as it gets closer to the end of this phase.

Best luck!!! If you study hard, ask questions, and don't miss one single day, you will succeed!

Thank you very much for the advices! We all know that all programs are different but with different point of views and the given advices it's appreciated. Thanks!!

Thanks everyone. This is great advice. I will be starting an LPN program in March. Im so nervous. I work full time and have 3 children and a husband but Im gonna get through this and I will be using these tips.

Good luck to everyone!!
