Working Private Duty/Home Health

Currently in LPN-RN program and working full time in long term care facilty. The program is getting pretty intense and I am looking for another area of nursing to work in. I wish i could stop working all together while I finish school...but that it not an option at all. Has anybody ever survived nursing school while working in home health/ private duty? Any tips would greatly be appreciated!

I am sorry that I don't have any advice for you but I am mighty curious to hear what others have to say on the subject. Soon, I will be in your shoes and it is extremely difficult to have time to dedicate for school while working full time as a nurse. I am thinking I will need to quit my hospital job to dedicate more time for school but I support myself financially and I don't have many choices. I am also tired of relying on student loans to help. I was thinking of doing the same thing as you, so you surely aren't the only one. Best of luck to you!!

I did both but found it was my full time job at the LTC facility that allowed me to pay my mortgage and pay for school. At that time home health was not giving me enough hours to do anything about anything really, except to take study time away and put even more miles on my car. I did get valuable experience though, which made it easier to get full time extended care home health work in in the future.

I managed to work fulltime the entire year of my LPN to RN bridge program and was successful in school, graduating 4th in my class. Did 14 hour shifts as a private duty LPN every Fri, Sat, and Sun and went to school Mon thru Thurs. I had plenty of time to study at work, thank God:) Its not easy but it can be done. Good luck!
