What are LPN duties in dermatologist office?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Updated:   Published

I have been a LPN for three years now, my first experience was working in the long term care unit for a year and I taken a break from nursing for 2 years. I have interview coming up with a dermatologist, I'm nervous because I'm not sure what my duties will be, plus I'm that good with computer. Please help!

Thanks!

It's been a few years, but I have worked in a derm office. Duties will consist of the usual - i.e., rooming pts, taking Hx, c/o, vitals (not all specialty offices take a full set), and otherwise getting pt ready for the dr.

Wound chks, dressing changes, assisting the dr w/office procedures, doing path sample prep and sending to path, checking path results when they come in.

You'll also do molluscum tx, making sure implements, trays, and other procedure stuff is autoclaved and ready for use. After a scabies pt comes in, you'll probably be responsible for swabbing down the room!

Rx refills, phone calls to pts, the lab, PCPs, making sure the liquid nitrogen container is FULL every second of the day, are just some of the daily duties. ! I am also an esthetician and I did skin tx - acne surgery, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. I also did really well w/product and service sales.

So, you see, there's lots going on. Specialty offices can be busy places, especially a derm office. There just aren't too many of 'em. Ehhh....who wants to be a derm? That's not what I refer to as one of the "glamour specialties" - like cardiology or brain surgery! I mean really, skin CA, acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, actinic keratosis, toe fungus, alopecia, lesions of every shape and size. Boooooring.

Expect that you'll only be able to take vacation when the dr is gone (especially if you are the only nurse or MA). Hopefully you can multi-task, 'cuz if the derm is busy (we saw 50 pts/d), being able to do so will come in handy.

Being familiar with the computer, EMRs, appt scheduling, insurance, and how to do a prior auth, and TARs are all regular fxn.

Keep us informed on how it goes. Good luck!
