To old to be young, to young to be old

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Been an LPN for 25+ years. Out of work for the first time since I graduated in 1986.

LPN jobs are scarce and most looking for young and working on their RN.

Question: Go back to school? Graduate and Retire in debt? Work a job at minimal wage (even if I can get one) Over qualified, under qualified, or both at the same time. Divorced 2 years after 30 years of marriage without alimony or my own retirement. Made too much to qualify for grants. Been trying to find a job, sign up for unemployment, look into school. Look for retraining. So far not qualifying for any assistance. Any advise?????

Have you considered looking at doctor office jobs? I went back to school and got an LNP license at age 53 and had no problem getting a job in a doctor's office, even without experience.

Have you considered doing home health/ private duty nursing?

I feel your pain. I just graduated Lpn in July at 45yrs old. Still haven't taken my Nclex because I'm scared. Don't give up.

rbrown69, what are you waiting for? I am 46, just took my NCLEX, 2 1/2 weeks after my exit exam. Don't wait! I am the first one in my class to take it and everyone else is waiting till next month. Now the hard part is finding a job as a new nurse. I really don't want to do long term care. Well anyways go take your test! Be positive going in, you made it thru nursing school! If i can do it so can you, i am 1 year wiser than you ? so I give good advice. Lol

Homecare is great and can give you a lot of flexibility. You can make a living and go back to school at the same time. If you have maxed out in the LPN role perhaps it's time to go back to school.

Way to go! Good luck on the job search.
