Starting a home care/ home health agency

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I am an LPN and I want to start a home care/ home health and PRN staffing agency. Any ideas where to start?

Anyone that passes a Level 2 background screening can own a home health agency. Depending on the state, depends on who can be administrator or director of nursing. Generally a Director of Nursing is required atleast 1 year of Supervisory experience as an RN. Administrators generally need atleast 1 year experience working in administration for a state certified health agency.

Is it easier in some states than others to start this home care/home health?

Can you please tell me about Georgia? If you have any info, please share. I have tried twice the application was rejected. I was looking into the Private care then, I started looking into the Home Health Agency?

Please advice.

i am alos an lpn looking to start my own home health agency. i have been doing a lot of research on the internet and i have found a lot of useful info. i am answering a comment that was made to you. someone told you that you have to be an rn to be an administrator. that is not necessarily so. i found the m'care conditions of participation on the internet and in the tthese it states: Administrator is a licensed physician,or an rn, or Has training and experience in health service administration and at least 1 year of supervisory or administrative experience in home health care or related health programs. good luck in your endeavor and don't let go of your dreams.

I am currently a home health nurse and have identified a need in the community. I have patients that need labs drawn either weekly or monthly and cannot get to the lab for multiple reasons, unable to drive, bedbound, ect..this is very stressing on families and they would gladly pay out of pocket for someone to come to there house and get labwork. Insurance companies will not pay for just labdraws. I would like to branch out on my own and offer this service to patients/families that need this, I know they would have to have an MD order and sign a release. I don't know where I should start. Any suggestions or comments?:heartbeat

Hello, I also am in the process of opening up a home health agency. I am a LPN, but am going into business with 5 other ladies.... If at all possable it is easier financial wise to have some partners and definetly need an RN. It is an expensive and very long process...lots of paperwork. We are aproximetly 3 weeks away. Waiting on medicare # right now then off to our state with the application for them. Would love to answer any questions you may have. Good luck!!

Stormy!

I am in Missouri and am working on the application to start HHA. Could you please tell how much funds do I need to show in company account for the start of HHA.

Did you complete the application by yourself or hired a consultant and did you opt for accreditation?

I would appreciate if you guide/advise me.

Thanks.

Hello...I believe that you have to have 14,000 in the bank, that is for medicare. However it is more than likely going to cost more than that to get started...it has for us anyway. We filled out the applications ourself. The process is long and not easy. I will tell you that we found out today that it won't be 3 weeks...probably 4-6 months before we can get a survey due to lack of funds the last couple of years at the state level.. there is 20 some applications in front of us. Don't want to discourage you, but thought you may want to know as we thought we were almost ready to open and are a little disapointed at the length of time it will take.

Hope all goes well for you!

if you are able to get an agency started, how do you figure out what to pay your staff....aides, homemakers, attendants, LPN's, RN's, office staff???? Lets assume this will be a private pay agency.

I am starting a home care agency in New York state. I started form the sratch almost 2 years ago. I have been approved and i'm getting ready for a pre-opening survey. I'm very frustrated right now because i don't know what to do. The bad news is, i am a second year nursing student and i

have 2 more years to go. Because of this i am having a hard time finding a nurse and the state requires me to hire a nure before they come out to do the pre-opening inspection. I work in the hospital and none of the nurses are interested. The bottom line is i don't know what the heck i'm going at this point, i didn't think the application was going to be this much harder. My plan for going into this was to have like a small homecare business on the side whiles i go to school and work part time, neither did i know that it was going to be this huge thing. I mean i have done most of the hard part at the point but i feel like i cn't take it any more and i am on the verge to break down, although i hate to see the hard work i've put into this for the last 2 years go down the hill.

Does anybody has any advise? i really can use it.

People had suggested that, i get a nurse as a partner but i don't even know where to get the partner. Does any body knows who might be interested in partnering with someone.

I wanted to comment on the home care agency opening thread.....

I also, am in Missouri and would like to get one started. I ran/owned one in Vegas for 11 years and absolutely loved it. It is me and my hubby's passion. I would be interested in talking more if either of you two are. I spoke to a surveyour today in Missouri and it is taking 2 years, (24 MONTHS!!!) to get the state out to survey. Isn't that crazy??? You could go bankrupt before you even get started!

Hope to talk to you soon.

I have attended some general start up classes through SBA and found them to be some what helpful. I just don't know where else to start. I want to staff LPN, RN, PT, Companions, and Nurse Assistants. Can someone provide me with useful information. Like how to research the area I want to target and all I have to do to get started. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks
