School Nurse Scope

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I've been working at a daycare since I graduated nursing school and just passed my NCLEX-PN. The daycare wants me to stay there as a nurse. I really dont know where to turn to about scope of practice, paperwork I will need to keep, and regulations. I live in NYS and I really dont want to lose my license because I was unprepared going into this.

NY state does not allow LPNs to practice independently. You must have RN oversight.

School Nursing Practice

You cannot legally use the title of school nurse as an LPN. Do you have an RN to over see you? A physician to write protocols/standing orders?

You still need all the proper paperwork from the doctor. You can't just hand out meds that a child/parent brings in. And still - according to the website - you need an RN to supervise you.

This was copied straight from the first website the PP posted. If you haven't looked on that website, I suggest you do. It can answer all your questions.:

Can parents make changes in their child's medication orders written by their provider? Only the medical provider prescribing the medication can state when the medication is to be administered. Changes in medication times and dosages must be ordered by the provider. A parent/guardian cannot direct licensed health professionals to administer medications to their child that are not consistent with the provider's order. Provider orders instructing schools to check with a parent/guardian for a dosage, when to give a medication etc., are not acceptable orders. Per Education Law Article 139 § 6902, licensed nurses may only administer medications consistent with orders from a duly licensed provider.

I would be looking for work elsewhere before you get your license & livelihood in jeopardy.

I definitely will. Thank you.

Physician specific written order with specific parameters are required. OTC including bacitracin and pain relievers require physician order or physician written protocols
