TESTING STRATEGIES

1. Restate/ Reword the question. Be clear on what is being asked

If there is a lengthy client situation or case study, read the stem question before reading the case study.

2. Read ALL distracters before answering. Evaluate each distracter for ability to answer the question asked. It may give correct information but not answer the question.

3. Focus on eliminating responses instead of seeking the "right"answer. In the NCLEX there may be more than one answer that is correct. You are looking for the BEST answer. Focus on eliminating responses and the best answer will surface.

4. Priority Setting - use the frameworks of Maslow Hierarchy, ABC , "unstable before stable" as priority setting guides.

5. Use nursing process sequence - Assessment should occur before intervention. Even in a code you assess breathing and pulse before "911"

6. Safety - do no harm. Err on the side of promoting physical safety for pt .

7. Take care of patient before you take care of equipment.

8. Consider and uphold the 5 Rights of Medication administration standards

9. Don't spend alot to time on questions you don't know, and realize that there will be questions you don't know. Don't panic - try to eliminate responses - then make an educated guess.

10. If part of the answer is incorrect, the whole answer is incorrect.

Although very few, you may find negatives in the question stem. Be alert to these.

11. If you really have to guess - look for responses with

broad focus ("multiple aspects of the child's life are affected" rather than "frequent fights with peers") and average length of answer (not shortest, not longest)

12. Be wary of answers that have absolutes (always, never, only, etc) in them. Be wary of answers that make the client seem inferior, unworthy or ignorant. When asked about numerical values or dates, the one in the middle range is more oftern correct.

Hi Baylay, I just graduated from Antelope Valley Medical College on 11/18/05 (private school also) on 10th and J. We were the first LVN class to graduate (ll of us made it out of 15). I have been going to AVC also to finish my prereqs for RN program (still have four more anatomny, phys, micro and chemistry (taking chemistry this semester). I just registered for NCLEX yesterday and am studying my butt off right now. My 21 year old is in the RN program at AVC. I did the same thing you did, could not wait three years to get into AVC's program. But we will be able to go to the bridge program and just go into the last year of RN program. I wish you the best of luck in your schooling. When do you graduate? I did okay, finished with an A, honor roll, but it was hard. You know that, I'm sure. I am excitied about going to work soon I hope. Keep posting and let me know how you are doing. Take care. Oldernursing Student in Palmdale, CA

Thanks so much Commuter. I'm anxiously awaiting your news. I will do the same thing you did go back and review my weak subjects (there are many I am finding out by taking these practice tests) I have been to San Antonio and Houston. It's always hard moving to a new place and feeling comfortable. I was an Air Force wife for 17 years so we moved alot. I understand what you're going through. I wish you the best. California is getting way too crowded. I was born in Orange and grew up in Torrance/Redondo Beach area. My daughter who is an RN student wants to get out of here, but she has another year and a half of school. So we're stuck here for now! Take care and hope you are getting settled in. Hope you get your letter soon---------------------:) :) :)

Hi again Oldernursing student,

I will finish next Dec. I'm excited to finally be starting classes on what I want to do! There are 30 in these classes, compared to 60 at one on 15th street. Good luck on chemistry! I found it fun! Let me know if you want suggestions for instructors for the sciences, but I guess your 21 yrs old know's just as much. As far as bridging over to the RN prog. I'm still stuck with taking physiology. Many commute so pass it but you know how it is to commute! Plus I'm getting old...47 this year!

Good luck on your NCLEX! I'm sure you'll do fine!

Thank you for the tips. I will remember them when I take my NCLEX. I took the practice test in November after our Ist semester of school and did poorly. I am so afraid of the testing process. Thanks for the help.

The first step in doing well on the NCLEX is to get rid of the fear. Once you lose the testing anxiety, you will be able to do more things than you ever knew possible!

Good luck. I'm sure you'll pass on the first try. ;)

Hi Baylay, you will do fine and that is a more manageable class. We were lucky and only had 15 students, had alot of extra help from the nursing instructors. I'm right with you (I'm 48) so I know that commuting is really hard at this age. Thanks for the encouragement, you also have mine. If you have any questions while you're in the program, let me know maybe I can help since I just came through it. I finished with an A (4.0) but I studied 24/7 and had no life for 13 months. I was also taking a class at AVC. I still need the four core classes to get into the RN program. Just focus on your nursing program (LVN) right now it is enough. Talk to you later. Leaving for Vegas this morning. Happy New Year. Older Nursing Student in Palmdale, CA
