LVN(91c grad)applying to challenge NCLEX RN

...is this possible? I just recieved my application in the mail and I am also new to this site. Before I send in my non refundable payment I wanted to know if anyone knows wether or not they accept the US Army 91c school or will I just have to apply to LVN to RN bridge program here in California?

I've been a LVN for 15yrs, but the past 6yrs I have been a stay at home mom. Since I let my license expire(did not think I would return to NSG burnt out)I had to sit for the NCLEX PN again and luckily passed. In any case I'm finding it a bit challenging re-entering the work force while I have been out so long. Although I have a lot of expierence, acute, out patient, etc...I am at the high end of the pay scale because of expierence 9yrs(not counting 6yrs at home)and am not getting worthwhile offers. I thought if I could challenge the RN boards I would be more marketable with the LVN background...any advice or thoughts are welcomed. Thanks!

If you are a 91C, can you work as a RN in the civilian world?

No, you can not. You must have an RN license and you will not be able to obtain one with only the 91C MOS behind you. However, you can use your 91C training as the basis to take the LVN NCLEX in the state of CA and, I believe, some other states that I can not remember at the time.

The 91C20T (to give it the full descriptor) is how I received my training back in the 70s. I sat the LPN boards in New Mexico (our school was in El Paso so it was closer to go there than Austin TX) and transferred my license to Texas without a problem as soon as I received a permanent posting in Texas. I have since then be licensed in two other states than New Mexico and Texas and never had a problem with my training as a LVN being done through the military course. Actually in the 70s we also received managerial training and some other practical admin skills than are not normally taught in LPN/LVN schools.

To be eligible to sit for NCLEX RN you must have the education and hours. It has been some time since I looked at the application, but I believe you must graduate from an accredited RN program. However, you may challenge the LVN NCLEX--they have specifics on the application. When in doubt, email the board (calling is difficult as you may get many busy signals). They reply within a week.

I thought I read somewhere that California will let lpn's challenge the rn nclex exam? She did say she just received the papers in the mail correct? What are the papers for? Maybe I read this wrong!?

No such challenge in Calif. To become an RN (ADN or BSN) you must have the education and hours. One can enter as an advanced nursing student or take a bridge class...but that's it. No easy way because LVN scope of practice is very different from an RNs and the education reflects that.:redpinkhe

El Paso? Fort Bliss, huh? Sounds like you spent some time on the hill and took care of my ADA buddies. I'm a 91c also, but that would not qualify me to challenge the NCLEX RN.

I agree it doesn't qualify us to challenge the NCLEX RN but it did give me a ton of useful work and general purpose skills. Actually I was at William Beaumont Army Medical Center which was at the top of the hill. Heck of climb from the downslope parking lots lol. Enjoyed my time in El Paso but I prefer the central Texas hill country since I am a native born Austinite.
