LPN Specialties

I have been in the nursing field for 9 years. 7 years as a CNA and 2 years as an LPN. I am content as an LPN at this time. I may consider bridging to RN a little later, but for now I have a question for any knowledgeable nurse who may be able to help. I have worked in the Geriatric field and no other. I would like to branch out a little so here is my question. Is there any specialty (dialysis, wound care, etc.) that an LPN can do? I see a lot of different opportunities for RN's, are there any for an LPN? I love what I do, I just want to see what else may be out there. Thank you all!!!

I've worked pediatric private duty (hated it), corrections (loved it) & psych (loved it). I know the doors aren't as open to us as they are the RNs but there are other jobs out there, you just have to look. Good luck!

You can do physical rehabilitation, which involves helping patients recover after strokes, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, motor vehicle accidents, etc.

You can also do wound care, corrections (jail & prison nursing), IDD/MHMR nursing, home health, private duty, psych, addictions (e.g. methadone clinics), family practice, adult daycare, and case coordination for insurance companies.

When I was an LPN:

Worked in Acute Rehab-SCI & TBI, General Rehab;

PDN and skilled visit home health;

Ambulatory Care-specialty practices (orthopedic surgeons);

Medical Daycare with children with special needs;

Nursing informatics for Medicare;

Vaccine/wellness clinics.

There have also been openings for Wound Care/Hyperbaric Technician that I have been considered for as well.

There are many out of hospital settings where LPNs can thrive in.
