Tennessee here, surburb of Knoxville.. LPN for 16 plus years and they tell me I top out at my current $18.00 per hour in LTC as a charge nurse. Work 12 hour shift.. 7p to 7a, NO shift diff, NO weekend diff.

Housing in this area can be as much as $1200 per month for a small rental house or apartment.

I've also worked in the Pensacola, Florida are in LTC, comparable wages and moderate housing prices there.

the pay is very low in orlando for nurses in general. i just moved from orlando this past year, after living there 5 years. the hospitals like ormc and florida hospital do not really hire lpn's for many of the floors...and if you do get on you will work for about $12-14.00 hour. the hospital in ocoee does hire lpn's and the pay is a little higher around $16-$17 hr (it is called health central). as an lpn i chose pediatric homecare because the pay was between $15-21 hour for lpn's (dependent upon the complexity of the child or if you work group home). 2 really good pediatric homecare agencies are children first and psa--they both offer training and support and have a good variety of cases to take...they work well with your sechedule if you need some flexablility. i just finished my rn prior to moving and worked at one of the big hospitals...they start new rn's between $17.50-$20 hr!!!! i fortunately started at $20 because of my 10 years lpn experience. in a nut shell yes the pay is really low. i hear some ltc places pay up $21/hr--but how good they are is the question. good luck with your move. i miss orlando but am enjoying cali (even with the cost of living) the pay is great and the nurse patient ratio's for rn's is even better.

I also work in Oklahoma at one nursing home I made $13/hr no benefits but my job now I make $11 for 1yr experience plus benefits or you can opt out benefits and make 1-2 bucks more. In this area thats pretty good money, its 2x as much as the average 'good' paying job around here. And the cost of living isn't high
    ex.
    3bdrm 2ba CHA 2 car garage starts @ about $500/mo

That does seem like a REALLY low rate of pay. I remember reading that the RNs on OK make lousy money too. Your cost of living must be lower......What does a 3 bedroom houst cost? How much is it to rent a one bedroom apartment?
Here in CA, you need at least 300,000 for that 3 bedroom house, and 850 a month for the one bedroom apartment. (Much higher in L.A. or the SF Bay Area)
The cost of living here is low and Im originally from MD but I have gotten spoiled by the Oklahoma's low cost housing, and the utility cost aren't like the big city either. I make $11 plus benefits and hubby my $9 for our family we do pretty well..the more you make the more you spend

I am a new grad from Georgia and my first job is in long-term care with a starting pay of 17.00/hr. The county hospital here only pays 13.84/hr for lpns.

Thanks oreocookie! I think I'm gonna do just the same. I was shopping for a registry I stumbled on this great agency and they suggested that I started as an LVN/LPN in a sub-acute/rehab facility (their client) and work from there. bye for now.
