I just want to be an LPN...

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Why do people have to make it sound like I am taking the 'easy' way out?

I intended to go the RN route, but after being out of school since 1999, and having a 2 year old to care for and no help at all, well, RN is too much right now.

I have no money and I need to work as soon as I can. I do plan on getting my RN later, but I am just fine with LPN.

I have been doing prereq's this year to prepare for nursing school and right around mid year I realized that LPN is fine. I can be just as happy doing that. I will never want to be in any form of management. I don't like to be the 'boss' of anyone and the only thing that I want to do is give meds. So I will get my certification for that.

Why is this not good enough? Why is this degree so important to everyone? Even though those same people thought I was an idiot for wanting to be a nurse in the first place just one year ago. "Why would you want to clean up poop everyday of your life?"

Honestly I am just sick of it. I may be very happy to 'just' be an LPN, but if I want to continue and get my RN, it is MY choice. :angryfire

Sorry for this huge rant- I just need to hear from others who understand.

Besides, I am already into school and I didn't bother with the RN applications. I know what I want.. even if it is just 'for now'.

MY lvn instructor constantly urged us to all to get our RN eventually saying that the LVN license will hold us back and limit our choices careerwise.

I can appreciate her honesty in one way, but get pissed off in another. Not everyone that aspires to be an RN becomes one. In fact, it is not that easy to become an LPN, either. There is absolutely nothing wrong with encouraging people to go as far as they want to, but it should not be made to feel that it is easy or mandatory in order to gain respect. People have been on waiting lists for 4-5 years, and life changes for some that have to wait that long. Also, the bridge programs are young, so, the seats are limited at the moment (I hope it changes for the better for those that do, in fact, want to become RNs). Basically, I am saying that while you encourage people to go further, share what is available for them, now, in case this is as far as life allows for whatever reason. Sometimes, just hearing the limits may inspire folks to go further, but don't discourage a person that chooses to stay where they are.

I guess that if I was impressed with what I saw (with more than just money), I'd be on the bandwagon as well. I just see most of the RNs I know as being stressed out the same as anyone else, and with more responsibility. I have headaches, now...I don't think I can handle more.

:monkeydance: I'm considering going back to get my rn license. I don't know when and right now I'm too busy working.A lot of valid points have been made about the nursing profession. I'm not looking forward to the excess paperwork/ responsibility. If I get my rn license I dont think I would want to work at a hospital(maybe home health or in the insurance industry?) I enjoy being an lvn right now( I've gone on vacations, bought a new car, closing on my first house).Nursing school was extremely hard and stressful and I'm enjoying my hiatus;) !!!
