I could use some advice...

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello everyone. I hope you are having a good week so far. I have a question for you and I'm hoping you can help me out.

I have complete 4/5 of my pre-reqs required for the ADN program at my local CC. I had to drop the final "5th" pre-req last Jan. because I got very sick and spent some time in the hospital.

Well, I enjoyed my time off a little too much, and did not start back up this fall to finish that final class. I have started getting the bug to get back at it though and am wondering what I should do.

((One of the reasons I decided to take a much needed break was my fear of anxiety over working with patients and messing something seriously up. ))

Anyway, I have been thinking about an LPN program instead of the original program I was going to apply to. The school is very close to my home, I could get it done in relatively the same amount of time. And I seem to feel more comfortable with the thought of being an LPN rather than an RN.

But, I'm so close to the ADN program, I'm not sure if I should just do that and hope that the skills I learn will help me to conquer the fear I have, or if I would be getting myself into something I can't handle.

I have a Bachelors degree in another field. There are many programs around that offer me to get a BSN from my BS degree, but that would require much more time and of course.. much more money.

I have plenty of time to go back. My youngest is only 3 and I'm hoping that by the time she is in 1st grade, I would either be working or in school during the day.

I'm not sure if this makes sense. I'm just trying to cover all my options and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice as to what you think would be a better fit for me... LPN or RN?

I know this question gets asked on here a lot. But I'm hoping you all have some good advice.

Thanks if you made it this far. I really appreciate it.

Specializes in Medical-Surgical.

Go for your RN! LPN will take as much time as your RN ADN, especially at the point you're at academically. I'm a LPN (brand new nurse) right now and I will continue to pursue my RN degree even though I still need my pre-reqs before I even get into the nursing program. Confidence will come and grow in either program. And you will be a RN by the time your child is in first grade. Just my two cents, good luck with any avenue you choose!:anpom:

Oh, thank you so much. I know in my heart, that is what I want to do. But I feel like I'm just so scared to do it.

I hope to some day go on and become an NP... I just worry about taking that first step.

Thanks again. Your advice is really appreciated. Any other comments or experience or anything at all would be great too! Thanks again!

Just go on for your RN now. I'm an LPN, and although i've learned a lot at this level, I wish I had went on to RN school instead. Now, i'm a LPN, and in classes again for my RN.
