Desperate LPN

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I am an LPN in Minnesota with over 4 years of experience. Currently work in a specialty care outpatient clinic and also work on-call for a pediatric home care company.

Originally went to a 4 year university out of high school (Pre-med major), but struggled with the pace and class sizes and was advised to check out nursing programs (come from a family of nurses) and went to Saint Paul College and graduated with an Associate's degree in Practical Nursing.

I am struggling because I have been applying to many RN programs and cannot seem to get in anywhere. Recently enrolled in Presentation College for their online LPN-BSN program, but with their "conditional" accreditation they received, I am hesitant to spend a lot of money if they end up losing their accreditation by chance. Did not get into round 1 of MANE program and was wait-listed in Round 2, but not accepted.

Am I alone? It's not like I have a bad record. I did have 1 bad semester at the university, but I took charge and left and thrived in a community college setting. But, my prerequisite grades are good and my TEAS score is very good. Still no one wants me.

Does anyone else feel like they are never going to be an RN? I am even looking at Bachelor programs online just so I can keep continuing my education instead of just constantly applying and feeling like a failure. I am not in nursing for the money, I feel like I was put on this earth to be a nurse and I love what I do. But, I can't be apart of the future of health care without an advanced degree or as an LPN, at least not within our company. I have big goals and dreams, but I feel like they may never come true without an RN license. I am not built for inpatient or a high powered job, I am made for a care coordinator or manager and that's what I love to do.

Sorry, end rant. I hope I am not the only one who feels like this.

Hi LauraBud, first congrats on looking to advance your career. There is another board devoted to LPN to RN programs that you might want to check out, might be some useful resources there. LPN to RN Nursing Student

What is your GPA and TEAS? If you aren't getting into a MANE BSN program, it's because one (or both) are not high enough. It is competitive admissions, and they only look at those two numbers. Also, be mindful of what courses the college uses to calculate GPA. It's not cumulative, it's JUST the classes from the first semester of the MANE curriculum that are used for your GPA. Sorry to hear you aren't having luck getting in. I don't know about the programs you're looking into, but with today's competitive job market, you want to have a degree from an accredited school of nursing. This will open you up to the most opportunity as an RN.

Let me know if you have any questions, and best of luck.

It is difficult to get into nursing programs anymore. They get to be very selective since so many people are applying. I don't know if you have contacted ? I don't know how already being an LPN would work with their program. I believe Indianan Univeristy also has an LPN to RN online program.. Good luck to you.

I completely understand your frustration. I have been an lpn since 98' and really like clinic work. I didnt until last few years decide that I wanted to go back to school, and my problem is finding one that I can still work with. I can't just quit or go part time with a family.I have found one program that works for me but I didn't score high enough on the HESI so I have to wait until next summer to take it again and Excelsior just isn' an option. I am tired of the same lpn pay and not advancing. I went to the VA to move up the so called career ladder and if anyone has tried to navigate USAjobs, its terrible. I was told I am not eligible to apply for in-house lpn jobs because I am not working as an lpn.(because I actually took a job as a health technician, just to get my foot in the VA door), .So I feel a little stuck. My last job was at a hospital based clinic that I loved, but they started laying off a lot and any job I applied for that would advance me as an lpn, I always had to wonder if I would be laid off. Sure enough two positions I interviewed for and turned down for that reason were cut. That is why I left too. I wanted to pursue something more without worrying. So its not the exact same situation but I feel like I am running into walls everywhere I turn. Good luck to you. Hopefully you'll get in school soon!

GPA - 3.6 and TEAS - 80% = 11.6 total. I forget the breakdown of my actual percentages of each area of the TEAS. But, I feel like I am an expert in applying to MN RN programs and I am fully aware of everything you are saying, but thank you! Yes it is competitive, but I just read on here that someone got into the exact program I was applying for for Spring 2015 with a score of 11.0. Her GPA and TEAS score both less than mine and I still didn't get in. I got wait-listed, but still didn't get in. Whatever, it's the school's loss because I would have added to their high NCLEX pass rate. I will just keep applying, I guess. That's all I can do right?

Hey, did you end up going to presentation college?
