Does anyone know about WIA????

It stands for the Workforce Investment Act. It is to fund career changes and job retraining. We will find out if we qualify at orientation.

I got a Hearts Grant so do you think that I will still be able to get WIA for food, transportation, etc. I've been reading up on it and it seems like they pay like 15.00 a day.

I think it is one OR the other. Who cares about the $15/day? A least you have the $13,000 school paid for. I heard a rumor that I make too much money to qualify for WIA so my wife and I may have to pay for school out of pocket.

i just got some info regarding the first two classes:

nurs 1110 and nurs 1310

n 1110 is an on-line class and it is an academic skills class that is only worth 1 hour.

n 1310 is pharmacology: we will be receiving reading assignment shortly .

I don't know about your income, but I wouldn't tell them about my wife's income. I graduated from OLOL and had the grant. My combined household income was in the six figures and I had no problem.

Thanks, Monilu. My wife works for a non-profit so her income isn't an issue. OLOL says it is not sure if the WIA grant will go through and I don't qualify for Hearts because I live in Los Angeles. We'll see!

I found this post from a student who graduated two years ago:

Random tips:

-Don't buy the Pharm book you will receive ALL the notes, same with Med Surg I,II,III. . but, the Med Surg book is good for referencing for clinical paperwork

-You will HATE care plans/maps (invest in a complete care planning book. . heck, just write your plans at the bookstore and never waste the 40 bucks on the book)

-Go ahead and read up some on Fluid and Electrolyte Balances

-Take the Hurst Review a few months after you start the program. . it will help you through.

-I found some test questions came directly from the Saunder's NCLEX review book. (Blue book)

-Don't pick your study partner until a couple weeks in. . when you start to catch on to personalities

-The Med School cafeteria is better than the hospital cafeteria

-There will be 50 of you and only one printer. . be nice.

Have Fun!

GaGarcia,

You found the best advice written by the student who helped me with the program. Search for her advice, you cannot go wrong. The only suggestions I disagree with is not to buy the Med-Surg book. While I did not read all of the chapters, many questions come from there.

Also I have a care map templete that is the best. I actually found it on a blog from this website. I never had to redo another care map and always got raves from the teachers. They like it since it is not confusing. You will see that it can be changed and manipulated to match the information you have on your patient.

(I think it attached), if not I will send it from my personal email.

Be nice to the secretary, she will make life smoother for you.

Also, if you are struggling and are borderline; if you are a nice person and have not caused problems or if you do not have an attitude you find out that the teachers are more willing to hear your suggestions to throw out that question that will help you.
