I think I hate nursing school

I am finally in my 1st semester of nursing school. We have just started going to clinicals. The information we have to go and get the day prior to, put together, research, etc. is unbelievable ! I am a LPN, and do not remember this being so intense. Maybe its been too long (15 years ago), but I absolutely do not remember doing care plans. My instructor expects me to remember everything. I never worked in a hospital, and don't really even know how to find the information I'm looking for. I want to drop out ! My family is freaked out because I've been after this for so long. Do RNs really and truly do care plans like this on the job? If so, I don't know if I will make it in the "real world". Any tips for clinicals would be appreciated. Going out of town for a couple of days, hope it helps to calm my nerves,,,I'm going dowwwwnnnnn.

Hang in there! It gets easier. I remember having to sit up all night trying to get those $@2$@@% things done. Fortunately, I'm down to my last 3 weeks of clinical in nursing school and the care plans are gone.

They bash us with them because they are trying to make us think like nurses. It is not a pointless task.

Several students in my class are LPNs and they have said that the main difference between RN training and LPN training is that you are taught why you are doing things. Those care plans will teach you critical thinking skills you never thought you had!

You'll be fine! We all have our moments of hating nursing school!

Well, since I started this whole thing,,,I think I should give an update...I am about to finish up,,,still hanging in there. Care plans are still not fun, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I finish up this week, then finals next week, and if all goes as planned will be on for the 2nd semester in the fall. Thanks for all the comments, encouragements,etc....they have all been useful, and uplifting! We can do this ! We can do this !

Good for you mimimartina!!! I know times can get tough and there are days you ask yourself"what the heck am i doing???" but in the end it will all be worth it. Everything happens for a reason..you CAN do it!!! I start in Fall and im already asking myself..can I do this? Is this what I was meant to do ? I made it this far for a reason and I hope I can kick my low self esteem to the curb!!!! I try hard EVERYDAY!

ok..so after reading the many different post on the site about Pharm and care plans...im starting to get a little worried...i start (traditional asn) clinicals in fall 09 at OLOL in Baton Rouge....any advice???

Ok, calm down. There are wonderful links to care plans on this website. Search care plans. I found one that the teachers loved and never had a hard time with care plans again. I am at work, but I will put the link for that care plan on here tomorrow.

Nursing courses are hard. If they were not there would be way too many nurses out there. Just make up your mind to study, study, study and it goes by fast.

Good luck

Thanks.....hard to believe that this semester is almost over! It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be! =)

I've been a nurse a little over 3 years at a large hospital. I have never written a care plan since nursing school, never heard them even mentioned at my hospital, and completely forgot about them until reading your posts. In fact just reading your post takes me back to the nightmare and anxiety of the night before clinicals when we all stayed up till 1:00 am finishing those wasteful papers and then the alarm went off at 5:00 am to make to to clinicals on time.

My experience is that we follow the doctors orders. We refer to the chart and follow their "care plan." What a joke. Seriously, we are so buys running around like chickens with our heads cut off that the thought of sitting down and writing a care plan is ludicrous. But if you want a career in nursing you have to do what you have to do. Good luck.
