What can you do with a Canadian Nursing PhD?

I was looking up universities that offer MSc/PhD programs in Ontario, namely McMaster and UfT.

Is there a point to getting a Canadian Nursing PhD, can you go far with it? I realize it is research based and best suited for those who enjoy that.

I am hoping someone who has experience in applying/doing/done their PhD or someone who knows others in Canada can fill me in.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

I'm not sure you'll get any replies. The PhD nurses that I've been acquainted with in Canada are a little too... umm... good for allnurses.com. But we'll see, could be interesting.

Need a sister site, aboveallnurses.com :yeah: or smarterthanallnurses.com

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

I have a friend with a PhD (obtained in the US) who is Canadian. She teaches at a university there. She is a very nice person. As to her colleagues, I can't say.

Specializes in ED.

I have to agree with you...the ones I've met are also too good for us lowly "regular" nurses, but they're also - umm - eccentric. VERY eccentric. I don't know if it's a pre-req or what lol, but it's definitely a personality trend in the PhD nurses I've met.

Specializes in Internal Medicine.

I know its better to have your PhD in the United States-

There is no nurse anesthetists in Ontario. NP's dont make significantly more money I find neither.

Hmm. I must say with all this, Im outside the norm. I am a PhD Nursing student at the University of Toronto. I havent been on this site for a while. There is a whole lot you can do with PhD in nursing including Professor, Researcher, Nurse Clinician, Clinician Scentist, Chief Nursing Officer, Nurse Consultant, Dean, Health Policy and several other Leadership and Management role. As you go up the nursing lader, there is more and more opportunities open. Truely, the sky is the limit. Also, I must tell you that if you come to Toronto. You are guaranteed funding of 15,000 a year (this includes scholarships and TA/RA) plus tuition fees. If you choose not to take this and work in nursing education e.g. as a nursing clinical instructor, nursing professor, teaching assistant, the government will pay your tuition, they will also pay for your masters. Let me know if you have any other questions. Perhaps we can start a Canadian graduate nursing school tread.

About Nurse Anesthetist in Ontario. There will soon be nurse anesthetist in Ontario. University of Toronto just created a program for nurse anesthetist. At this point you have to be an NP first before you can get into the program. This will change shortly.

NP's in Canada generally make 35-55 dollars per hour while RN'S make around 25-40 dollars per hour.

There is really a whole lot of opportunities for graduate prepared nurses in Ontario

You mentioned the government will pay for your masters/tuition, just a bit unclear how that will happen if you have your PHD already, maybe you meant something else ?

I meant the government will pay for your masters tuition for example if you are working as a clinical instructor or Teaching assistant in Ontario while taking the masters courses.

Same for PhD, if you are working as a clinical instructor, teaching assistant or lecturer in Ontario while a student, the government will pay for your PhD, hope this is clear.

Also, in Ontario, their is up to 1,500 dollar bursary for nurses to go back to school for Bachelors, masters, PhD, certificate courses, conference. You can claim it every year after you pass the course but its not guaranteed (however, most people that apply get it)

Also many hospitals offer tuition reimbursement program, I think St. Michaels Hospital covers all your tuition and Sick Kids covers up to 5,000 of your tuition.

You can also apply for Ontario Graduate Scholarship which is 15,000 a year. However, if you get it, you are not allowed to work more than 10 hours a week.

You can also apply for CIHR, SSHRC. They are both very competitive. If you get CIHR, you can get 40-60 thousand a year if you are a member of a regulated health profession like nursing. If you get SSHR, its around 25000-35,000. For both awards, you are not allowed to work more than 10 hours a week (However, do you need it after all this money).

Several other agencys like Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario etc offer awards greater than 30,000 a year for PhD students.

The universities also offer several awards.

This is our little PhD financial secrets. Feel free to ask me any more questions.
