Hello Everyone!

I`m so thrilled to start my journey in the BSN program at VIU in Sept :yeah:....but I`d sure love to hear from any other student moms out there! Especially if you went to or are currently at VIU! What was your experience and do you have any tips or tricks for balancing classes, studying, being a mommy, being a wife, and staying fit......never mind sleeping, cleaning and grocery shopping  Reading these posts and hearing the experiences from others really helps ease the tension...so thank you all for posting :)

Congratulations on beginning the journey! I too am starting the BScN program this fall and I too am a mom! How old are your kids? Mine are 33 months and 14 months old.

I am so worried about how I will manage to balance school, projects, my husband, the kids, the house, and my needs as well (although the latter is literally the last thing on my mind).

I don't have any advice for you, because I myself am seeking some, but I wish you luck, and I hope someone can give us some words of encouragement!

Congrats once again and all the best!

Awesome! Congrats to you also! :yelclap:

I have a 22 month old little girl and a little sister who I help care for, with special needs. It's going to be a busy busy life for us for awhile but I keep hearing it's doable and SO worth it!! Gotta keep our eyes on the prize!

Wishing you the best of luck! I'm sure we will connect in these posts again at some point!

High five to becoming a nurse! :w00t:

I will be honest, it's tough......I am just entering preceptorship, my kids are 4 and 6 and it's tough......it's rewarding though, I'm very glad I did it, but just be prepared that school has to be number one and sometimes you just have to get people to take your kids so you can study or do projects. I had no time for anything extra, had to quit the gym and give up doing anything in my spare time. It is doable, but just try to be realistic about it.....best of luck, it's a crazy time, but worth it in the end.....I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.....

Hello Everyone!

I'm just south of you, attending Camosun College. I have five children (16, 14, 12, 10, 7.5) and have just finished my first year of my BSN. I am still trying to figure this balancing act out myself, but for what it's worth, here's my tips:

Sleeping- I'm already used to being tired... But I do try to get to bed earlier on weeknights. Recently, during our practicum, I took to having the occasional afternoon nap so I was a little more pleasant to be around. ;)

Studying- I would have to hide myself away or I was regularly interrupted. That meant either leaving the house to study, or threatening death to whomever knocked on my bedroom door unless the house was on fire. And some days were simply school-write-off days. I occasionally would let my studies slide that evening and try to make up for it later.

Kids- It's a good thing to teach kids to be more independent. I let go of trying to be/do everything for and with them, and instead gave them room to figure things out. Somedays it worked, others not so much. ;)

Husband- love him up; go on dates when possible; hopefully he supports your endeavors and will step up his game when you're cramming and/or composing papers...

Shopping- (sigh) I haven't been super successful here. But menu making followed by detailed grocery shopping has made my life easier at times. That, and frozen pizzas... ;)

Exercise- I hear that! I ended up buying a pretty groovy elliptical so I could fit in fitness w/o having to go out. Plunked it in front of a TV so I could either watch while I'm working out or even listen to a recorded lecture on my iPhone. Sometimes if I watch House, I like to pretend it's patho review... ;)

Good luck figuring out your groove. It won't always be easy, and some days you might want to give up. But get more rest, don't get too ahead of yourself, take a deep breath, and start again the next day.

Heather

Thank you ladies! I really appreciate your honesty and tips

I'm trying to sort out a sample schedule already...knowing it will no doubt change a thousand times! Everyone has such a different experience and I love hearing all about them from "it don't see why everyone thinks its so hard" to "students are dropping like flies, this is the hardest thing I have ever done!" You are right Heather....just gotta find MY groove :rckn:

Elliptical and a little Dr. House is a darn good idea......;)

Thank you again!

Tanna

you ladies are amazing!
