Save Money for UK Dream

World International

When I was ten years old,I used to tell my mom that I will become a London Nurse. However,my dream went sour when the Nursing jobs in UK dried up in 2011.I was struggling to secure a Nursing job in the Philippines back then,so I tried my luck here in Saudi Arabia.

Currently,I am working in a polyclinic in Riyadh.

My contract will end next year and it just so happened that there is a massive recuitment of foreign Nurses now in the UK so I want to grab the opportunity. But I have a few questions.

1. Does NHS hire OPD Nurses?

2. How much do I have to save up for all the requirements?

3. How long is the process?

As of now I am preparing to start a self-review for IELTS since I am planning to take the exam here in Riyadh six to eight months from now.

I am a bit worried that I will not have enough the necessary fund to pursue my dream given that I also send my siblings to school.

I am the bread-winner of our family.

I hope you can share your knowledge.

Thank you in advance.

Hey babypot29 :) Welcome to Allnurses. I will try to answer you as much as I can.

1. Does NHS hire OPD Nurses?

2. How much do I have to save up for all the requirements?

3. How long is the process?

1). NHS is hiring nurses from all the nursing fields. However, OPD is not as popular in the "needs" list by most NHS employers though they can hire you and just re-assign you to other areas where there is a higher need for Nurses. Tip - don't be picky. Wherever the employers will assign you, just accept it and you can always transfer to your preferred areas few months after. If I were you though (and this is my suggestion), try applying to Nursing Homes as well as they are accepting Nurses from any fields. And these Nursing Homes deploy nurses faster than NHS. I was hired by a reputable Nursing Home in Manchester and could have arrived in UK 3 months ago. But anyway.

2). I started my UK application February this year, and so far I have spent nearly Php150k. I'm only waiting for my deployment (passed IELTS, CBT, received my DL, Visa app soon). You will be spending a lot of money on couriers (Fedex, DHL, etc) since you have to send documents to your agency and to NMC. You will also be spending for your medical fees and TB screening which will cost you a lot, IMHO. Most NHS trust will be shouldering the expenses for visa application, IHS fee, plane tickets, etc.

3). The process really depends on how prompt you can submit documents both to your agency and NMC. Since you have worked in Saudi, it will take more time as you have to secure documents both in the Philippines and in Saudi. I know off a few ex-Saudi Nurses who spent a considerable amount of time just for securing documents.

I don't know (and no one knows) what will be UK's situation 6-8 months from now (the time you are taking IELTS) given the situation of Brexit and the unknown future of UK immigration.

Best of luck and God bless! PM me if you have more questions.

some costs are mentioned in the various threads in the Nurse Registration forum as well as issues with the NMC. I would also suggest checking the NMC website out for costs.

Yes NHS hospitals will employ OPD nurses but you may have better luck if you hold certificates to back your training and experience.

Process time can be long but some are able to come to the UK before everything is completed with the NMC but work at a low grade which if you are sending money home may be difficult. Cost of living in the UK is not cheap
