OB floors

I have had my Australian license for several years and am doing travle nursing here in the States. I am seriously considering doing some travel nursing in Australia (spent 10 1/2 months there, not nursing though). I work Obstrtrics here in the States, doing L&D, newborn nursery and postpartum. This is where my heart and love is. I know they use Midwives for L&D, but do they ever hire RN's for the OB floor? Thank you.

They didn't used to but I think some places are now. Try contacting some of the Obstets hospitals. Mater Mothers Brisbane, King George V Sydney, they should be able to tell you. You would not be able to work L&D over here without midwifery but you would be able to work on post - partum and certainly in gynae. Some places will hire you if you are undertaking the midwifery course and Central Queensland University has an external post-grad degree on offer in midwifery. The external course would allow you to work and travel and even complete it in the states!!!

Here, you now do not need to be a RN to start education as a midwife and some of the unis offer Bachelor of Midwifery. Don't need to be a nurse first anymore. ?

The hospitals around here only employ midwives to work on the maternity wards. C

Qld registration is somewhat different and still requires you to have a registration in general nursing gefore undertaking midwifery but some hospitals are employing RNs in post partum but would prefer if you were a student undertaking Mid certification. It really depends.
