need advice on where to stay in Alberta,CN

hiya. im a nurse working in London and i'm in the process of "finalising" my transfer to Canada hopefully after getting a job.(my interview is this June)

you see...i chose Alberta over Vancouver mainly 'cause of the standard/cost of living,etc.

i need advice if an inner city/central Alberta is "better" than that of sub-urban places? and how about hospitals? can you guys recommend any? (i'm trained/presently working on a plastic surgery ward)

I hate to dash some of your expectations. Alberta really isn't that much cheaper to live in than BC. In fact I've lived in areas of BC that have had lower costs of living than Alberta.

Factor in the high costs of utilities in this province due to the climate and you really are looking at a cost of living similar to that of BC.

Calgary and Edmonton are the major centres for health care. The health care system is undergoing an overhaul which has people wondering what the hell the government is up to.

Houses in a "nice" area are going to cost you at least $375K. Property taxes are around $200/month, as electricity AND gas for heating. Public transportation is bad in both cities for shift workers, so you will need a car. Figure on $150-300/month for car insurance depending on how old you are, sex, and what you drive. If you have kids be prepared to shell out between $350-600 for school fees in the state system, add in monthly bus passes for students (roughly $460/school year/child) and you get the idea.

It really isn't an inexpensive province to live in. The economy is booming but there is a housing shortage, a good place can be a long hard search away.

So, the grass really isn't greener on this side of the Rockies.

my main workplace will be the University Of Alberta so i will be staying in a flat near or around the area.

any comments on Alberta?

and about the transport system being "bad" would having a car be a lot better? i need to sit in an exam in order to get a license am i right?
