Moving to Australia

Hello all,

I'm from the US in Indiana. I'm currently a Licensed Practical Nurse but I will be getting my RN in may, just an associates degree. I am hoping to move to australia next december after my husband graduates college. Will I have any trouble finding a job just have an associates degree in nursing? What about the transition from US licensure to Aussie licensure...how difficult is that? I visited Surfer's Paradise in Queensland a couple of summer's ago, and absolutely fell in love. The whole atmosphere is so laid back and not so 'consumer driven' as the US. I never knew a place on this earth could be so beautiful. The people that I encountered were SOOO nice! I would love to move there, now all I need is some inside info from people that live there! HELP! :nurse: :)

Specializes in ICU.

Sorry but you found Surfer's Pradise to be laid back!!! You better head for Sydney or Melbourne then because anywhere else is going to have you falling asleep!!!:D :chuckle:

No problems with finding a job but you might have to apply direct to the hospital. Quite a few will help you come out. Now as to registration apparently it depends on whether you want to come out on a visa or immigrate. If you are coming out on a visa then contact the registration board of the state you are going to be working in and go through them. Each state has a separate board. (there is a link to the different boards in hte "sticky thread" at the top of this forum) If however, you are immigrating then you have to apply thought the Australian nursing and midwifery council.

Also be aware that you will have to take out private insurance once here - you will not be covered by our health care system BUT insurance is cheaper. Talking to an American currently working with me he is paying $100 less per month than in the USA and does not have to use a HMO.

Thanks so much for the information. I don't know, compared to the hospital I worked at in Louisville, KY, I would almost want to be falling asleep! :chuckle My husband and I are so excited to be moving there.
