Inquiry: Competency Assessment Program for NZ

I have several questions about the CAP. Any info would be appreciated

1. Can the CAP be waived if I passed the NCLEX? Can I apply for reciprocity? (I passed the NCLEX under the Vermont BON)

2. What do I expect during the CAP?

3. How is the CAP like?

Additional inputs are appreciated.

Thread moved to the International Forum since it is specific to registration issues and not specifically for work related issues in NZ. Please refer to the red banner at the top of that forum.

NCLEX is the licensing exam for the US, it is not acceptd in other countries. If you do not have work experience as an RN, you are going to need to go thru one of the programs in NZ.

Having a license in the US does not give one an automatic license in another country or even state, and that is what is meant by reciprocity.

There is no such thing as reciprocity of the license, you are evalutated on your credentials from school as well as work experience. Licensure in the US when you do not have experience of working there will not help you.

Best of luck to you.

To be qualified for CAP (Competency Assessment Program) you need to have 3 things first:

  1. Local License
  2. Minimum 1 year post registration experience, and
  3. IELTS score not lower than 7.0

If you already have all these, then what you need to do is fill out the application form at NCNZ and pay the fees when approved.

When approved, you need to enroll at a CAP-provider school where you will take the CAP in 6-12 weeks (depending on the school). According to the people who already went through CAP, this is a sort of clinical rotations plus other lectures concerning life in NZ and their laws.

Hope this helps.
