She failed the 3rd. time? Let me ask these questions: How were her grades in nursing school? Did she graduate from a good school of nursing or from one of those diploma mills? Did she devote enough time, passion and conviction while she was preparing for those unfortunately failed three tries to obtain a nursing license? Pardon me for asking these tough questions but there is obviously a reason for three failed examinations.

Admittedly I passed my California RN board exam before many of the bloggers here were even born, but I have been giving this advice to many prospective nursing examinees: Read and study the reviewers over and over and over. There are hundreds of questions and answers in a book but after you had read and re-read and answered and re-answered each and everyone of of those hundreds of questions you will tend to remember many of those questions and answers. Now what do you do then? Study them all over again! And again...and again!!!!

Result? Personally, I passed the California RN board exam the first time I tried. But that was a loooong time ago, but my advice remains relevant up to these days.

Completely agree with this advice. This is exactly how I studied for the NLE, the CGFNS and the NCLEX. It's really the only way one could internalize the content and for the mind to fully absorb it. There's no substitute for practice: one has to consistently answer a couple hundred questions per day as a part of the review process (I recommend answering questions that have a quick rationale following the question, just like saunder's cds, so you are also reviewing content and studying strategy while practicing answering questions).

Tell your girlfriend to not lose heart. Most likely there was just a problem with the way she prepares. Aside from adhering to the correct method of reviewing, one also has to have the correct mindset: the conviction that come exam day, you would settle for nothing less than a passing grade. Aim for a much higher score than a passing grade.

Just a thought: Olympians prepare their whole lives, waking up before the sun rises everyday to practice, in preparation for a mere moment that would spell the difference between a medal or nothing. It's the same here: you practice answering thousands of questions (I did more than 5,000 for the NCLEX) just to prepare for an exam with a few hundred questions. Come exam day, you are like running on autopilot. You don't even have to think that much -- you just KNOW the right answer. Because you did the legwork, the probability is in your favor that you would either pass... or pass with flying colors.

There is a famouse quote, "Repeated experiences have one aim, to learn from your mistakes".

If she failed once, twice, and thrice, something is really wrong. I think it would be better to identify what went wrong during those times. It could be a lot like financial, little studying time, family problems and so much more. Specify the problems and look for resolutions for it. A focused study and practice is the key to ace the test. It would help if she can explain the material on her own words to someone or even to a dog acting like a teacher. Reading, speaking and writing can boost the memory and eases comprehension. Good luck to your wife!
