Hi, I did one year for the LPN program and got a Certificate in the US. My certificate was accepted in Alberta where i now work. My husband wants us to move back to Toronto. My question is does anyone know any college that offers online course to change from Certificate to Diploma LPN. CNO didn't accept my registration and wants me to meet the Ontario Diploma standard. Thanks in advance for your reply.

Yeah I noticed that too. I thought maybe I should move there!!lol

Nothing she says makes any sense.

.It depends on where you work. I work for Calgary Health region now Alberta health services. With 8 years of experience, i am at the highest level making $28.44/hr, I work nights only additional $4, I also work every other weekend additional $2.75/hr do the math .

I you think i'am overstating how much i make visit www.calgaryhealthregion.ca click on any LPN job . I'm at the highest level with 8 years of experience. Thanks.

OK, there is something missing here. If CLPNA accepted your Certificate from the US and you wrote and passed CPNRE, why is Ontario rejecting it? If you pass the national exam you are good to go.

When the diploma was introduced all certificate LPNs were grandfathered. I remember this because quite a few LPNs wanted the diploma.

Which area is your education lacking in? The main difference in the diploma/certificate in Alberta training was the addition of university transfer Arts credits.

CNO said i'm lacking enough clinical hours. Thanks

I didn't take the Canadian practical nursing exam. My NCLEX was accepted in Alberta and was not required to take any exams.

Actually, your hourly rate is $28.44 just like mine. Shift premiums are tied to the job and if you are bumped they are gone. To state that you make $35/hour is misleading. Yes, you make close to $35/hour on certain shifts but not every shift.

I am not sure i mislead anyone. May be i should have explained how i got to $35/hr. If i take out the weekends which i work every other week, my regular for night shift will be $32/hr still very good pay eh.

I have no idea if you are overstating your pay or not. I simply stated that it sounds like the pay is very good for an LPN position because in Ontario, there are not many LPN jobs that pay over $28/hour and that is with shift premiums.

Another issue in some parts of Ontario is that hospital positions are few and far between lately as our provincial government is broke, in fact the deficit which was announced a few days ago is huge. There is even talk of "Dalton Days", and what this means is that government employees and this includes nurses may be forced to take unpaid time off. Ontario is having some big troubles right now and if I could leave this province, I would.

Maybe you can get the required clinical hours through Bow Valley College's practical nurse program for IENs? It's not a program designed for your exact situation, but I am not sure many programs are. You could try getting an appointment with the nursing student advisor, explain your situation and show them the list of clinical hours you require in order to meet CNO's education criteria and see if Bow Valley can modifiy their program to meet your needs. It's worth it to try contacting a student advisor because they can provide guidance about education options and if they cannot answer your questions they can either investigate for you or direct you to the approipriate nursing faculty.

good luck with your future plans, kelseya
