CES or CGFNS and NCLEX

  1. :spin:hello guys,

im a newly grad and just passed my local board in the Philippines. i just would like to ask regarding ces, cgfns and nclex.
    1. what are we going pursue? the CES or cgfns exam? which is more necessary and appropriate?

    2. my friend is processing his nclex-california and now he was bothered about the rumor that he should have CES or certificate from cgfns for the visa screening.

    3. i heard from my friend's auntie whos working in US as a nurse, she said that a lot of nurses was deported bcoz they dont have cgfns and the quality of nclex is now depleting instead of cgfns. i was really confused about this topic because as much as i knew a lot of states in the US are not requiring cgfns as their requirements. whats the truth about this?
    please help

    1. CGFNS exam should only be done if the state requires it and now only a handful only require it. CES full course report is the one to go for
    2. CES is not required by CA as they do their own evaluation, we do not recommend CA as initial licensure and there is a sticky explaining why. All foreign nurses need visa screen certificate which is ICHP part of CGFNS
    3. Not true, NCLEX has just raised it's scoring a little bit and NCLEX is required by all nurses regardless on where they are from including US nurses. If nurses are being deported it is because they are in the country illegal or not maintained their legal status.

Why don't you recommend CA as initial licensure?

    1. CA will not issue a license without a SSN#.
    2. The passing letter is only valid for three years and then your file is destroyed along with your NCLEX results.
    3. You are not considered a US RN unless you have an actual license issued to you.
    4. Without a license number, one cannot endorse. You will need to use the License by Examination application to be able to get licensed in the new state so that you can maintain your NCLEX results.
    5. CA does their own credentials eval, and it will take you four to six months on average to get approval to sit for the NCLEX exam.
    6. You will be spending approximately $200 for the licensure and fingerprints, but never be able to use the license within the three years; so the money is just thrown out the window and for no reason. This does not include the $350 for the actual exam if you are out of the country.

hi ms. suzanne. thanks for the info. btw I'm a new grad nurse and passed the NLE. I'm applying now for my CES in Massachusettes. An agency is helping me throughout the process. but I'm kinda confuse with this. CES is an evaluation right? I heard that MA board of nursing also ask for SSN (#) CGFNS Id for CES. how true is it?

    hoping for a reply. thanks

Everything will be on the state nursing website. Have you checked there to see what they state?

Actually, when applying for "green card" and you CAREFULLY READ the instructions for "Application for immigrant visa and Alien registration" (FORMS DS 230 part i and part ii), please be very careful with part ii, "sworn statement" which states specifically: (Section 40 (e).. )

Aliens within the following classifications are INELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A VISA. Do any of the following classes apply to you?

(e)..who is a healthcare worker seeking to perform such work without a certificate from the CGFNS or from an equivalent approved independent credentialing organization. (empahsis is mine)

seemsquite clear that you are signing an oath to the extent that you are presenting yourself as someone who will seek work as a nurse and will have a CGFNS C.E.S. validating your course curriculum as equivalent to US requirements. I suggest you download (PDF FILE) this application form and read that section carefully as you are signing an oath!

Regardless of state requirements, it appears that at a MINIMUM you must have CGFNS Course Evaluation (CES) as part of your application for green card status/visa prior to working as a nurse in the USA.

    Cheers!!

The fact that US Immigration requires a minimum CES (CGFNS) to be approved for your visa may be increased at the State level. As an example, Oregon requires CES (just as the US Immigration requires), but the state of Washington requires CGFNS Certificate, which includes passing the CGFNS exam as well.

Since California does its own credentials evaluation, that alone may serve to meet the US Govt requirement "CGFNS or from an equivalent approved independent credentialing organization."

As suggested, it is best to review the individual state requirements while keeping in mind that to apply for immigration visa, you are required to have at least CES.
