Olive Harvey close Nursing Program

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Well it is official, Olive Harvey has closed its nursing program, or should I say reassigned its nursing students to Daley, Truman and Malcolm X. Students were notified today, 7 days before class start. What a political mess with many incompetent individuals following the orders of a bully Mayor who wants to eliminate remedial courses (open door policy) at CCC's. How sad.

Time to uproot my plans for child care, transportation, study sessions, and part-time work to meet the mandatory requirements for reassignment. I am told I am MANDATED to go where I am reassigned and I can not request a change in schedule regardless if it is day or evening courses. If I do not want to travel far or adhere to the reassignment, then drop out of the program.

Also, 200 hundred College Professors are being terminated....so, so sad. Fortgot to mention, the respiratory program is reassigned to Malcolm X too.

OMG....cant believe the program closed. I graduated from there over 15 years ago and have run into a couple of other grads in my travels from state to state. It was a great program. Sorry to hear this news.'

Hope you can get your arrangements straight to pursue the program wherever it is held.

Good Luck

lylenrn,

Thank you so very much. I'm still taking deep breaths.

Another fiasco.....today we were to have a meeting with our Director of Nursing (very nice lady) welllllllllllllllllllll.........the meeting has been CANCELLED! We were told by the Executive Dir. of Nursing that we will be notified in 2 days. Therefore, we will only be allowed 1 business day to rearrange our life to meet the aforementioned needs in my original post. Enjoy your day. :)

I graduated last year and I am very sad to see what has happened to you and all of my fellow OHC classmates. A relative of mine is in the same situation at KKC. Whatever happens from this point on, don't give up on your dream. Keep your head up and just know that it is doable. Keep us posted. You have support here.

WOW! I graduated in 2008 and I'm in total shock! The Professors we so nice. I am sad to see the program disappear. Why are they dismantling the program???

I wish I really knew why the program closed. You know, we all can voice opinions as to what we think the reason is, was, could be, etc. I do not believe I will discover the truth about reasons to close the nursing program.

Unfortunately, as a student I had to secure an "available" seat at another college nursing program. At this point, the true reason for informing us students 7 days prior to the commencement of the program is to create anxiety about where we would be place without having adequate time to protest the ccc decisions. With politics (the mayor) and appointed individuals following command, it would take a strong body of people and additional organizations months to fight for the program to be reinstated at OH. I do not know if many students understand the concepts or protocol of educational politics. Not a fair fight. Rules change and loop holes, misconstrued legal contracts with plenty of pages of fine print to meet the need of the defendant (CCC).

The majority of students believe we can protest and have the program reinstated by August 23rd. Not possible. That's the reason for informing us via email, scheduling a meeting the next day, cancelling the the meeting at 6 am and informing us we will be contacted in 48 hours in reference to a class schedule. Once again, ANXIETY without maintaining a clear and concise thought pattern to appropriate address issues and concerns in a professional and ethical manner. It was set up so well. How sad.

I believe students should continue to fight for reinstatement, for future students, subsequently to acclimating to the undeserved and undesirable reassignment. We still need to have theory and clinicals somewhere in the event to obtain RN status. Protest for the cause however deal with the here and now. It's not all about self however self preservation will give one strength and courage to fight for those in need.

In other words, take care of you so you can in turn take care of / represent those in need (future students). I dislike the reassignment and I will continue to assist with reinstatement for the OH nursing programs (especially for future students and science professors whom lost an abundance of students).

If I misspelled any words or have grammatical errors, forgive me......I have had a long day and I AM exhausted. Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and continued support.:)

really? thats horrible because Malcolm-X cannot even handle their own student population, they are not capable of handling any more. We dont even have a teacher for our first semester class this upcoming fall, we have not even recieved a syllabus. So for additional students to be sent to Malcolm-X is a horrible mistake. Wow....sooo how can i transfer out of MXC? hah. nah, serious though.....

HoopZ20,

Were you accepted at MX or reassigned?

im currently enrolled. ill be 2nd yr there next fall, :/ dont know how i feel about that now, im not encouraged by this news either. 1st yr was a roller coaster, then over the summer our lab was in the works to be remodeled, but construction kept being pushed back, construction is due to start in the fall, yuup. Sooo no lab for the first semester, oh dont worry we'll have a makeshift lab in some classroom, or, half of our program will be assigned to a clinic on the westside that is fully equipped (but im pretty sure thats first yr)

:uhoh3: I found out about this today from the MXC staff. I went looking for a syllabus for the upcoming semester because I was told, last week, that it was ready but they were waiting for Blackboard to open in order to post it. I asked for the syllabus and they said it wasn't ready because it had to be re-written to incorporate Olive Harvey syllabus points.

I can't wait to see how THIS unfolds... as I have said since day three... expecting anything less than ridiculous and stupid sheet is just waisted optimism at MXC. :uhoh3:

HoopZ20,

It may difficult for you to transfer from one nursing program to another due to each school's curriculum. For example, students at OH registered for nursing classes and purchased books. Well, Daley indicated OH students must purchase the books for Daley Nursing program (which makes sense).

Unfortunately, some colleges are either behind or advance in specific subject areas. This may be one of the reasons it is difficult to transfer from one nursing program to another. It would only make sense if all CCC utilized the same curriculum (syllabus and unit/subject matter) and text books.
