JJC Spring 2011?

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

I posted a while ago in the Illinois section. No reply so I thought I'd see if it was just because its just not an active area or if there is no one on here from JJC. So anyway, anyone put in their application during the Aug 1st-15th open application? I applied for the night program and am currently waiting for an email saying they have accepted my application and when the TEAS test dates are.

I'd love to meet some other JJC students. If we get into the program we can set up study groups. By the way I've been through the first semester (long story, don't want to repeat what I've already posted here). I can share my experience.

If no one applies I'll assume the new applicants haven't found this great site yet:D

I believe they accept 60 day and 22 night. Something like that

JJC accepts 88 applicatants every semester. 24 for nights (which I am in) and 64 in days. You will be divided into clinical groups of 8. Good luck to everyone. You should be pround. You are now part of a rare group, JJC NURSING STUDENTS!!!

hi lilwannabeRN -

can you tell me what your 2nd semester schedule looks like? i'm finishing my first semester and heard that we go down to 3 days after this. you're sweet to post all of this for all of these girls. the not knowing was the HARDEST when you are waiting to get in!!!

and congrats to all of you girls! let me tell you first hand it's TOUGH. it is. don't underestimate it because when you go to orientation they're going to tell you that you won't see your friends or family for the next two years. it's a slight exaggeration, i'll admit, but they're not kidding about the time commitment. there's so sliding by. you HAVE to put in the time if you want to pass with at least an 80%. brace yourself and you'll all do great!!!

Sweetpea! 2nd semester is crazy. I had pharm that continued into 2nd semester (some people continued into the summer) So i had pharm the first 8 weeks . You will have 3 rotations you go through(each is 5 weeks) OB, Med-Surg 1 and Med-Surg 2. I started in OB then ms 1 and just took my last theory test for ms 2 today( i passed yay!!)!!! You will also have 8 weeks of Pediatrics in there also. Sorry, that may sounds confusing. I'll state it this way haha. I was in Pharm for the first 8 weeks plus OB, finished pharm. Then started MS 1 then Med Surg 2, i also had Pediatrics the last 8 weeks of the semester. ( i dont know if that came out any better haha) The first few weeks will be crazy you will have a seminar and conferences to attend on to top normal class times, When you are in OB you will also have a labor and delivery and newborn conference which are about 4 hours. So you will have a VERY VERY busy first month or so, but then it somewhat slows down from there. Yes, you only go to school 3 days a week, which days is different for everyone depending on which rotation you start in (some people start in OB, some in Med surg 1 or 2). Right now i have class Monday 10-12pm(clinical topics) then 2pm-4pm(theory) then have to go to the hospital to research my patient for clinicals tuesday morning, clinicals are tuesday then Wednesday i have Peds 10am-12pm and theory 2p-4pm then done for the week!!! Although you are in school alittle bit less the workload is still there but it is very much do-able! i still work 20+ hours a week, go out, see friends etc..etc. It will seem like things are very disorganized (which they kind of are) but just prepare and keep your schedule together and you'll be okay. You'll also have the ATI tests 2nd semester (which are just a headache haha) PM me is you have any questions about teachers or other tips !!! More than happy to help!! :nurse:

Hi, LilWannabRN...I saw the Fundamentals of Nursing textbook on Amazon for much cheaper that in the bookstore, but it didn't say whether or not the CD came with it. (I know the one in the bookstore comes with a CD). Did you guys use the CD at all? Do you know if it's something that we really need to have? I'm trying to save as much $$ as possible, buy I also want to make sure that I have everything I need! Thanks in advance!

honestly go for the option that is going to save you money. i never used the cd for fundamentals. there are some books down the line that i found the cd to be useful such as pharmacology but as far as fundamentals no. i never bought the workbook they suggested we use either but that's more of a personal preference. they will have the power points they use for lecture available to you, either online or they will hand them out. i printed those or used what they gave me and took notes in class and then went home and skimmed through the chapters adding whatever necessary information i thought was appropriate. everyone has their own ways of studying. when you get your list of reading assignments it's going to be overwhelming but skim through the chapters or you will never get through all of it. (this is just a suggestion based on experience). if you want to start looking ahead i believe they still cover (in this order) history of nursing, maslow and curriculum needs, nursing process and critical thinking, ethical/legal issues and normal aging first in theory and for clinical topics communication in nursing and health history, medication administration, and physical assessment. if you can i'd look in your calculate with confidence (or whatever book their using) and get used to metric conversions (mg to mcg and ml's, lbs to kg etc etc) it will put you ahead of the game and their will be math on every test you take starting day 1 plus a few just math tests. let me know if i can help ya with anything else!!! :nurse:

Thanks! I think I'll go ahead with the Amazon purchase since it sounds like the CD is not worth the extra $40+ it would cost me! I just fininshed NURS 100, so I already have the Calculate with Confidence book and I've gotten a lot of practice with metric conversions....so glad I decided to take that class! As always, you've been a great help. Thanks for the great responses!!!

just took my final and finished the semester with an a in peds and a b in regular theory!!! sorry had to share my excitment!!!! =):nurse:

wow.......that's great!!! congrats!!! :yeah: :yeah:

also to correct something i said in an earlier post...i was told by an instructor last week that there will be no going to the hospital the night before to research your patient like they were doing starting in second semester! this is good news for all of us!!! =)

Hello everyone! I know this might be a little off topic, and by the way, CONGRATS to everyone that gotten accepted this yr:)! Anyways, I am a little confused about the JJC's program for nursing. I have had TWO diff counselors tell me different things about how they count your GPA prior applying for the program...

Counselor #1 told me that they DON'T look at your "overall" GPA and they only look at your "Pre-req" GPA only...

Counselor #2 tells me that they DO look at your overall GPA and also for the "pre-req" GPA...

Confused....?

My situation is that my overall GPA isn't too well, its not that best? BUT if you look at my "pre-req" GPA, its actually pretty good?

My question is, which one of the counselors is right? Since most of you members here have been accepted. What did they look at when you applied? Because I am stressing over that I might not get in because of my overall GPA...

Please help!!

Thanks

hello!! this is what i know. they only count the gpa for certain classes (eng 101; psych 101; psych 215; heal 109, bio 250; bio 251) but having all the prereq classes done can be a deal breaker( you get points for the # of these classes completed)!! not just those they count the gpa for. i have seen/heard about several student with outstanding grades but did not have all of their prereq classes completed and didnt get it. my suggestion would be to do the best you can and get those prereq's done! the teas test is also a big factor into acceptance for the program. hope this helps!:nurse:

They do not care about your overall g.p.a. They only consider the g.p.a. for the classes listed above! Good luck!!
