Hiring freezes in hospitals?

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

I'm going to be moving to the north shore suburbs in a few months and I was wondering if there were any hiring freezes at hospitals in the area. I'm surprised at the lack of positions on the "jobs" pages for staff RNs. Any input?

Is it St. John's? I've considered applying there. I did clinical for our pediatric unit there and I loved it! I'm just not sure I'm up for the drive. But at this point I'm considering it. Thanks for the info!! :)

I work for the other hospital accross the street and we have over 50 positions ranging from ER, Surgery Cardiac, name it...we take new grads as well....those units do....from St. John's but yes they are hiring too. Well if the commute is an issue, i think my hospital also provides a relocation allowance. i'm not sure but one of the nurses i know moved from st. louis and she got relocation help. if you need more details about my hospital let me know so I can refer you...might as well get the referral especially in these tough economic times.

Thorek and Kindred are hiring new grads. I know this for sure because I've been invited for interviews and pre-employment physicals. I didn't accept any of the offers because the patient ratios are insane and the turnover is horrible. But if you are a new grad and don't want to resort to LTC, go for it.

Nursing Spectrum has a fair number of listings, and has a job fair in Oakbrook in about 2 weeks.

Problem isn't a job freeze in many cases, but a situation where they get many, many applicants for a single position. It's highly competitive at the moment

I have been looking for a new grad job since December, and am finally starting to feel like the work is paying off......

Advocate Illinois Masonic is having 2 new grad cohorts starting this summer......July and August.

Through other contacts, I have found some positions at U of Chicago, but I think you have to "know" someone.....

just for reference.....U of C and Illinois Masonic are hiring. Keep them in mind....

I just want to thank all of the nurses who replied to this post. It has helped me and Im sure many others in their job search. It is really hard for us new grads to get our feet in the door. Thank you guys again.

I work agency at Thorek and I can definitely verify "the patient ratios are insane and the turnover is horrible." I only go there because it's work and I need the hours. I usually only work there about one day a week so that makes it tolerable. They don't give agency nurses admissions, which is a good thing but that means at the start of the shift you get a full patient load. I get 7 patients on a Telemetry unit.

I was told by an HR person, that after the fiscal year in September, there will be more job openings at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Only 15 openings right now, and most are for Operation room RNs with experience. No jobs listed for new grads.

i saw someone post about illinois masonic hiring new grads, anyone have any more info on this? i can't get ahold of any nursing recruiters and when I apply on the website I get nothing. I'm not even a new grad I just haven't worked in the hospital setting yet...

Jordy,

Earlier posts in this thread are almost a year old. Things are certainly better, but still tight.

My unit has hired at least 4-5 new grads in the past year, but we still get more applicants than we need.

Keep looking and applying. And if you can get hired at a hospital with a nurse residency program, you are even better off.

Good Luck
