To Hospice nurses...

Specialties Hospice

Published

A relative of mine passed away Saturday night after a month-ish in hospice care.

I wanted to take a moment and tell you all that the work you do is amazing. I have always given good lip-service to hospice care, but I've never really experienced it. I used to wonder how you could do the job you do, and now I wonder how you could NOT do the job you do.

I'm completely astounded - I watched a person pass away at home, peacefully and not in pain surrounded by those who loved him most. The family was comforted by knowing what was happening, being informed as to what to expect (as much as possible) and by having the support of really wonderful, smart and caring nurses at their side.

You do important work! :kiss

I am sorry for the loss of your relative. Hearing comments like yours, melts my heart, and only encourages me to be the best hospice nurse I can be.

Peace to you and your family.....

are you ok?

That's just the point - we're all OK because of hospice care. It was time, and the way his life ended was, quite honestly, beautiful. No one could have changed the ultimate outcome, but he was able to die with dignity and in peace.

The experience may have changed me enough that I think I may be interested in being a hospice nurse at some point in the future.

Thank you, Leslie, for your support throughout and of course, for the big picture - your job is so incredibly valuable.

(((amanda))),

if the entire experience was so positive that it left you in awe of hospice and hospice nurses, then i find it safe to say you found your calling. i am smiling at your post because even though i wasn't there when your beloved one passed, i know exactly what you speak of when you talk about him being free of pain and at peace.

i think you should seriously consider this specialty if it moved you as much as it did.:balloons:
