Hi all. I have a question that I would love your advice on.

I am currently working as a Clinical Supervisor in an agency with a patient census of about 120. I take administrative call but rarely have to go out to a patients home. I have about 20 people that answer directly to me, I have 8 nurses, and 6 of them have less than a year in home care. I am also in school finishing my BSN. My boss allows me to go to classes but I make up that time in the afternoon. I also am pinch hitting for the QI/Education position because that person left abruptly.

I have been offered a job with a company that I used to work for back out in the field doing Case Mgt. That agency has census of around 500. I would be case mnging about 20 or so pts. I would fall back into a rotating call schedule. The administrator knows that I am in school and doesnt have a problem with me working my patients around my classes. Last week I found out that the administrator that offered me the position will no longer be the admin. but will be a clinical supervisor. They dont know who will be the admin yet. There is also a possibility that I will have to go to another office for orientation. (about 3 hrs from the office I will be working out of).

Also, I have a sick family member that may be moving in with us at the end of the month.

I was all ready to go to this new job, with the flexibilty for school and family member. But now I am having second thoughts about leaving my current position, even with all of its headaches because of all the uncertainty going on. What if whoever they put in the admin position has a problem with me going to school? Quitting school is not an option. I dont see how they can realisticly ask someone to drive 3 hrs for orientation, not to mention the fact of my class times. Tues/Thurs 8-915, and M/W 2-315. My two close friends that I have confided all this in have both asked me not to leave my current position, as I am "the best CL Supv that they have had". Their words, not mine. But since they currently work with me, sometimes I wonder if its just because they dont want to have to get used to another person.

I have been so stressed out lately about this that I have been having health problems with my ulcer, migraines, and totally mentally and physically exhausted. I apologize for this being so long, but I dont know what other angle to look at this from. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Can you ask to be put in a hotel? That is what I would do about the commute?

Did you ask them about your concerns?

Yes, I asked....... no hotel...... when I asked I was told they dont know exactly what is going to happen. They dont know who the new admin will be, and the commute would have to be done.

WEll I guess I would track the mileage in a mileage log book, track your meals and hotel and take it off your taxes as work related expenses.

I am wondering if the bigger problem is taking the job period. Seems disorganized. Do you agree?

Seems disorganized is exactly what I thought. It kind of scares me in the fact that they dont know what is going to happen with the different positions, not to mention everything else.

Cardiotrans, I think your instinct has already given you a strong red flag.

I think in general, anytime one is in school and working FT and adding an ill family member to the mix is a lot for any one person to have on their plate. It may not be the idea of the new job, but everything in general {{{carditrans}}}

So, as one who is doing that now, I can say taking on a new position is stressful enough, let alone everything else on your plate. I would say stick w the known, it will reduce your stress and fear of the unknown. You will always be able to go back as staff, but may not be able to get your manager spot back.

BTW, if you want to eliminate the manager stress, and trust me, I understand your stress, why not just work staff at your own agency where you are now?? Maybe working weekends will free you up for school and CG responsibilities during the week?

Best wishes w your decision. Remember to take care of you first.
