I am a nurse to a 2yr r old in a home health setting The mom leave her 2nd child (who is not my client) who is a baby in the frontroom with me while she goes & takes a nap or goes to the grocery store across the street. She's asked me to watch him while she goes to a movie or out with friends & has asked if I will drive her places. I told the RN who supervises me & she said it was okay. I see nothing in the careplan about caring for the sibling or transporting. Plus isn't this a liability issue? The other agency I work for is overnight & his older siblings aren't even allowed in his room with us if they get up early & mom is still sleeping.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Your agency apparently wants to assume the liability. As a practical matter, I see nothing wrong with watching the child while mom naps, but anything else is beyond limits.

Specializes in pediatrics; PICU; NICU.

I was in this situation years ago & my agency told the mom we were not there to watch the other kids. That's a huge liability if anything happens to the baby or to your patient. If the agency doesn't back you up, it's time to find a new assignment.
