how to change a s/p cath, have one tomorrow

Ive never changed a s/p cath. I was told that its just like changing a F/C. Is this true? I have to do one tomorrow (my first day on my own with HH). Any advice please!

Yes. Somewhat the same only easier. I was able to do this once with no problems, whereas I have problems doing f/c for females.

I have run into a few snags on 2 different patients with s/p caths. I met resistance...it took alot of repositioning, a few catheters and finally just quite a bit of pressure...but they did go in and had no adverse effects. THe next months change was fine for one and the other had problems with his cath. He eventually started on Sanctura and has been problem free ever since/ Most of the time, easy as pie!

it is my understanding, it's alot like a gtube. It has been in a while, and scar tissue has formed, so it's one out, clean area, and new one in. Good luck!

post how it goes! (i've never changed a gtube, but that is what other hospice nurses have told me)

Thanks guys! I will definitely post tomorrow on how it goes. I have been stressing and unable to go to sleep tonight, its now midnight, so now maybe I can get some peace, lol. I hate starting a new job and I hate doing a new procedure BY MYSELF, but maybe this will go smoothly. The previous nurse said that this one is particularly hard to do, which didnt make me feel any better. :smackingf
